The State of New Mexico is hiring a Regional Investigator to investigate wildlife violations and train law enforcement personnel. This position requires a bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience. Why does the job exist?

The primary purpose of this position is to investigate (using a variety of investigative techniques) and prosecute violations of Chapters 17, 30 and 66, and state Game Commission Rules. Train recruits and field officers in law enforcement techniques. The incumbent in this position may be assigned to a district within one of the four Department of Game and Fish Areas, and will be required to report to the Northwest Area office in Albuquerque, New Mexico as directed by supervisor for special projects.

How does it get done?

Investigate complex wildlife violations of Chapters 17, 30 and 66 NMSA 1978, State Game Commission Rules and special projects. Assist field officers and other agencies in enforcement activities and investigations. Maintain law enforcement training and certificates as a New Mexico peace officer. Properly document time spent conducting all activities and report all efforts to your immediate supervisor and appropriately manage individual caseload. Assist the Division in developing expertise and knowledge in the latest tools and/or technologies available (ie., GPS, cellular devices, computer assisted searches-Social Networks) for use in conducting investigations and assisting in the identification and prosecution of wildlife violators.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in any field with at least twelve (12) credit hours that pertain to the essential duties and responsibilities of this classification; and two (2) years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management, or wildlife law enforcement. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be a certified NM peace officer and have successfully completed the NMDGF Conservation School.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a Driver’s License, Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. This is a safety sensitive position and requires pre-employment drug screening.

Must have New Mexico Law Enforcement Certification and successfully completed the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Recruit School.

Working Conditions

Irregular Work is performed in a field and office setting and may involve irregular hours, overtime, travel and overnight trips. The job requires lifting, dragging, bending, kneeling, standing, walking, crawling and driving with exposure to stressful situations and uncooperative subjects. The job will also require working outdoors, often in inclement weather.
