The Great Basin Institute is hiring four Raven Survey Monitors for wildlife fieldwork in Clark County, NV. Responsibilities include conducting raven surveys, deploying decoys, and recording data. The Great Basin Institute is recruiting four Raven Survey Monitors to conduct wildlife fieldwork at several sited in southern Nevada. The Raven Survey Monitors will conduct common raven random point counts, deploy decoy stations and wildlife cameras, record encounter histories, and catalog raven nests. The monitors may support preseason preparation. The Wildlife Monitors will be required to demonstrate proficiency in backcountry wilderness field skills, including but not limited to 4WD vehicle operation, and use of GPS, topographic maps, and electronic data collection technology. In addition, the Wildlife Monitors will participate in a two-day training and will be field tested on their knowledge of and ability to follow monitoring protocols thoroughly and precisely. The Raven Survey Monitors will work for 5 days per week with 2 days off, but they must be available to work any of the 7 days each week, with the understanding that the schedule is subject change with little or no notice. This position will require long hours including early mornings and weekends.

Contract & Timeline:

Location: Clark County, NV (Las Vegas)
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree or coursework and experience in biology (wildlife or conservation), ecology or related field, desired;
• Experience in conducting avian surveys and nest monitoring preferred;
• Previous field experience that included:
• adhering to field data collection protocols, and
• accurately collecting and recording field data;
• Experience using hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and/or data collection;
• Knowledge of southwestern/Mojave flora and fauna desirable;
• Self-motivated with ability to maintain a positive attitude while working in a diverse team environment;
• Possess strong organizational skills;
• Ability to work in variable weather conditions, traverse uneven terrain, carry upwards of 20 pounds in a backpack, and otherwise maintain good physical condition;
• Willingness and ability to camp in remote areas;
• Familiarity with backcountry, low-impact principles preferred;
• Ability to work a variable schedule (including weekends) that may change with little or no notice;
• Ability to walk a minimum of 10km/day in challenging terrain and harsh and rapidly changing desert conditions, and otherwise be in good physical condition;
• Willingness to camp in the desert backcountry for consecutive days;
• Possess a valid, clean, state-issued driver’s license; and
• Ability to safely drive a 4WD vehicle on unpaved roads that can be steep and rutted;
