A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer
As a Principal Engineer, you will guide our team to create sustainable multimodal transportation infrastructure in various contexts. You will assist the Silver Spring Civil Engineering Group Manager and/or the Regional Design Director by independently managing and leading company projects in the Mid-Atlantic region. You’ll deliver projects from concept to construction, including stakeholder outreach, developing feasibility studies, and preparing construction documents for innovative projects. You will also participate in business development and project pursuits, playing a key role in the firm’s quality initiatives.
Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer
This full-time position typically works a hybrid schedule, with at least two to three days a week in the office. We provide employees with the flexibility and necessary equipment to work from home 2 days per week. The Silver Spring office of Toole Design is conveniently located just outside of Washington DC.
We are targeting a salary range of $125,000 to $160,000 for this position. Candidates with exceptional qualifications may fall into a different pay range.

Requirements
Qualifications of a Principal Engineer:
A Professional Engineering license in MD (other Mid-Atlantic states a plus)
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering
At least 15 years of engineering experience developing construction documents and/or public agency construction administration
At least 5 years serving in a project and/or design management role
A broad knowledge base in civil engineering, with specific experience in roadway design, drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling and design of accessible public spaces
A proven track record of delivering multiple large/complex projects on time and on budget
Experience developing construction documents
Experience in preparing transportation and local agency permit documents
General experience leading multidisciplinary teams, coordinating utility and right-of-way impacts, street lighting, traffic signal, and landscape/hardscape layout
Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
Experience in managing staff
Proficiency in Computer Automated Design (AutoCAD or MicroStation) and design software (Civil 3D, GEOPAK or InRoads)
Experience managing engineering projects in the State of Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic
Experience in preparing proposals and scope/fees
Interest in business development
