The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is seeking a Power Systems Research Engineer to enhance power system models for energy infrastructure. Join a dynamic team at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) to help tackle the nation's critical energy and environmental challenges. Our Energy and Environment Directorate is dedicated to modernizing the power grid and advancing renewable energy technologies.

As part of the Electricity Infrastructure and Buildings Division, you will contribute to research initiatives that accelerate the transition to an efficient, resilient, and secure energy system, crucial for sustaining our nation’s infrastructure.

The Power System Modeling Group focuses on developing advanced tools and simulations that enhance grid performance across various levels, from bulk energy systems to distribution networks.

Responsibilities

We are looking for an innovative and interdisciplinary Power Systems Research Engineer to enhance conventional power system models for a rapidly evolving energy landscape. You will be engaged in mission-driven research to develop solutions that integrate advanced power system tools to bolster the security of our energy infrastructure.

Your responsibilities will include:

Acting as a senior subject matter expert, leading multi-disciplinary teams on technical projects focused on power system optimization and capacity expansion.Conducting electric system simulations with a strong understanding of grid topology, optimization, and operational costs.Leading enhancements to modeling activities, designing simulation experiments, and solving complex technical problems.Applying theory to the development and implementation of innovative tools, algorithms, models, and visualization techniques.Publishing your research in peer-reviewed journals and contributing to technical reports.Building effective teams and mentoring junior engineers, fostering knowledge transfer throughout the organization.Managing project tasks, ensuring milestones are met and maintaining communication with management.Complying with safe operating practices and communicating engineering challenges and solutions to diverse audiences.Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include:

BS/BA degree in a relevant field with 5+ years of related experience in production cost and expansion planning models -OR-MS/MA degree with 3+ years of relevant experience -OR-PhD with at least 1 year of relevant experience.Preferred qualifications may include:

Experience in large-scale power system optimization models.Understanding of power grid operations and resource planning.Knowledge of utility industry economics.Proficiency in programming or scripting languages such as GAMS, Julia, or Python.Experience in stochastic optimization and dynamic programming.This position is based in Richland, WA. Remote work may be considered.
