Job Description
Total Energies is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher Data Scientist for a 24-month position focused on power load disaggregation in La Celle-sous-Gouzon, France. The role involves developing explainable models for energy consumption analysis using deep learning techniques. Candidates should have a PhD in machine learning, proficiency in Python, and enjoy teamwork in a multicultural environment. The position is part of Total Energies' commitment to the energy transition and sustainability.
Context & Environment
OneTech's mission is to provide the technological and scientific expertise required to support development projects and operations across all TotalEnergies activities worldwide (oil and biofuels, natural and green gas, renewables and electricity). Its 3,400 employees - engineers, technicians, researchers, and support staff - are based on 9 sites across Europe and are fully committed to helping TotalEnergies achieve its ambition of becoming a major player in the energy transition, aiming for net zero emissions by 2050.
Join our Customer Lines, Technical Lines, R&D Lines and Support functions teams, which assist all operational branches of TotalEnergies in their development projects and operational support!
Activities
The worlds of energy and artificial intelligence are undergoing major transformations: the former driven by the need for better consumption management, the latter by the rise of generative AI.
In this context, TotalEnergies is focusing on residential power load disaggregation. This approach aims to estimate the contribution of each appliance (heating, washing machine, etc.) to a household's total energy consumption. It enables consumers to better manage their usage and helps estimate available flexibility to support the grid during peak demand.
Recent advances in deep learning - such as BERT4NIL - have marked a turning point in research, enabling the development of more efficient and general-purpose models. However, many scientific challenges remain.
Following a PhD due to be completed in Fall 2024, we are looking for a postdoctoral researcher for 24 months. The position is based in Saclay. The contract duration is up to 4 years, renewable twice.
The employment contract must be signed within three years of obtaining the doctoral degree, in accordance with Article L.431-5 of the French Research Code.
As a postdoctoral researcher, your responsibilities will include:
• Developing generalist, explainable multi-appliance disaggregation models based on minute-level data.
• Adapting these models to lower-resolution data (15min / 30min) using distillation methods.
• Ensuring the explainability of the results obtained.
• Benchmarking foundation models such as GridFM and BiTSA.
Candidate Profile
This position is for you if:
• You hold a PhD in machine learning and/or deep learning.
• You are a Data Scientist with solid training in AI and strong skills in deep learning.
• You are proficient in Python (the team's main programming language) and comfortable with PyTorch, GPU computing, and cloud environments.
• You enjoy teamwork and knowledge sharing.
• You are fluent in English, both spoken and written, in a multicultural environment.
