Description:
The Agulhas System Climate Array (ASCA) is an array of moorings, which was partially deployed from April 2015 to April 2016, and fully deployed from April 2016 to May 2018. We are looking for a dynamic physical oceanographer to lead the analysis of this mooring data in the context of regional impacts to South Africa in terms of shelf dynamics, coastal rainfall patterns, and interactions with embayments such as Algoa Bay. The incumbent will be working with a multi-disciplinary team within SAEON and will interact with teams at both UCT and NMU to understand the interactions of the Agulhas Current regionally. They will also collaborate with scientists involved with ASCA from the Netherlands and the US, and work closely with other observational, statistical, and modeling experts (from Germany). There are also opportunities to go to sea on data acquisition cruises and influence the direction in which the science develops.

The key focus will be on publishing work from ASCA, but the incumbent will be able to get involved in other projects or set up new research projects, will have options to supervise students, and gain lecturing experience. SAEON and UCT are a hub for international scientists specializing in Indian Ocean and Agulhas Research both in terms of observing and modeling. There will be ongoing opportunities to work with visiting global experts.
