Job Description

UVA is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for a 2-year project on the Fairness of Climate Solutions at the University of Amsterdam's new interdisciplinary climate institute, SEVEN. The role involves coordinating research, developing partnerships, and contributing to grant proposals and publications. Candidates should have a PhD, experience in climate justice, and the ability to engage in interdisciplinary collaboration. The position is based in the Netherlands.
Would you like to contribute to interdisciplinary research on Fairness of Climate Solutions? And are you keen on working with societal stakeholders? SEVEN, the University of Amsterdam's (UvA) new interdisciplinary climate institute, is looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated researcher with a completed PhD to play a leading role in our 2-year project ‘Fairness of Climate Solutions’.
Join our team!

You will be part of SEVEN, established in 2024 as an interdisciplinary climate institute of the UvA, involving all seven UvA faculties. Fairness of Climate Solutions is one of SEVEN’s four core projects. In this transdisciplinary project, SEVEN aims to develop a better understanding of fairness in climate solutions that can assist all actors in creating just and effective responses to climate change. The project brings together insights from law, social sciences, humanities (including the history of ideas and ethics), economics, medicine, and the expertise of climatologists, hydrologists, and other relevant specialists, as well as insights from practice. The aim is to develop a framework to identify factors and mechanisms that hinder or facilitate fairness, and to apply that to specific issues, with a view to identify and map current injustices in climate governance at the global, regional, and national levels; and evaluate and develop specific climate solutions that correct rather than perpetuate those injustices.
What are you going to do

In your role as postdoctoral researcher, you will:
• carry out and coordinate interdisciplinary research with other SEVEN researchers on the theme;
• map related projects and initiatives conducted elsewhere to develop SEVEN's unique proposition;
• developing a network of academic and non-academic partners for the purpose of developing grant proposals;
• coordinate and contribute to grant proposals in collaboration with the SEVEN core team and grant support staff;
• contribute and lead to articles to be published in international peer-reviewed journals;
• support in organizing all sorts of events for academia and societal partners;
• present intermediate research results in internal discussions and external workshops and conferences.

You work in close collaboration with the other project leaders dr Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh, prof. Andre Nollkaemperprof (both at the Faculty of Law) and prof. Joyeeta Gupta (at the Faculty of Social and Behavorial Sciences). You will become part of the SEVEN core team that on a day-to-day basis develops SEVEN's activities. You will benefit from frequent exchanges with three other Post-docs with similar assignments that are embedded within SEVEN.
What we require

The position is open to researchers who have completed a PhD in one of the disciplines relevant to the mission of SEVEN. In addition, you have:
• a demonstrated interest and publications in the field of climate justice;
• the ability to do high quality systemic literature review on climate justice;
• experience in organizing and coordinating research projects;
• a demonstrated affinity with interdisciplinary research;
• a demonstrated ability to communicate complex findings to an audience with varied disciplinary background;
• fluency in spoken English, and excellent writing skills in English;
• willingness and ability to work independently and to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team.
What we offer
• The position is for 0.8 fte. Depending on the disciplinary expertise of the candidate, options can be explored for an additional 0,2 fte teaching time at one of the UvA Faculties.
• The position is offered for 2 years.
