Job Description
Jefferson Parish is seeking a Planner I for its Engineering and Environmental/Urbans Planning department in Kenner, LA. The position involves data analysis, GIS training, zoning, and subdivision reviews, as well as public hearings and report preparation. Applicants must have a relevant degree or equivalent experience. A valid driver's license and personal vehicle for business travel are required. The role is not remote and requires in-person attendance.
Position: PLANNER I (5085)
examination is announced to establish an employment list to fill one (1) current east jefferson vacancy in the department of planning and future vacancies as they occur.
the purpose of this position is to participate, under supervision, in the acquisition, organization, and analysis of social, economic, geographic, and engineering data. Employee receives training in the techniques of geographic information system (gis) and charts, graphs, and maps. Receives training in special projects such as applications for grants pertaining to federal funds. This position plans, researches, zones, and reviews subdivisions, reviews development, conducts public hearing reports and presentations, data entry, records management and maintenance, gis application, and other tasks as assigned.
assists in researching and preparation of technical zoning and subdivision reports. Assists in researching and preparation of ordinance changes and revisions; historical research and recommendations. Employee analyzes and evaluates data required in the development of parish and regional comprehensive and strategic plans. Performs basic statistical and gis analyses. Reviews land use applications, architectural drawings, and engineering blueprints in ensuring compliance with all applicable development regulatory requirements.
position requires driving of a personal vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and personal automobile with minimum liability insurance available for business use (business travel is reimbursed on a mileage basis) will be given preference.
applicant must meet one of the following three options:
• possession of an accredited bachelor's degree in urban studies or city, urban, regional, or community planning.
• possession of an accredited bachelor’s degree (in any field of study);
plus
, either: (a) successful completion of at least twelve (12) credit hours of graduate-level coursework from an accredited college/university in urban studies or city, urban, regional, or community planning or (b) significant (approx. One year), paid experience assisting with urban design, planning/zoning research and records management, land-use/development regulation, or with work closely related to city planning or municipal code enforcement/construction permitting.
• possession of an accredited associate’s degree (in any field of study);
plus considerable (approx. Three years), paid experience, as described in option 2(b) above.

related education, experience, and/or professional certification(s) above and beyond the minimum qualifications will be required for consideration of an entrance salary above the minimum rate.

the examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment.
