About the position
The Placemaking/Urban Design Specialist will play a crucial role in the Maryland Department of Planning's efforts to promote sustainable urban design and placemaking initiatives across the state. This position involves coordinating the Department's new placemaking initiative, supporting the advancement of Maryland's sustainable growth principles, and collaborating with various stakeholders to enhance community planning and design practices. The specialist will focus on developing place-based approaches that cater to the diverse needs of Maryland's communities, ensuring that cultural resources are valued and public spaces are activated effectively.
Responsibilities
• Develop and coordinate the Department's new placemaking initiative.

• Advance best planning practices in placemaking and scenario planning for various jurisdictions.

• Lead the development of placemaking and scenario planning data sets and visualization tools.
,
• Review and comment on local plans and programs to compile best practices for economic development.
,
• Provide technical assistance to local and state planning staff and officials.
,
• Coordinate with Regional Planners, state agencies, and community organizations to promote placemaking initiatives.
,
• Conduct training seminars, workshops, and educational events on placemaking and urban design.
,
• Assist communities in understanding assets and opportunities for economic development.
Requirements
• A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with 30 credit hours in relevant fields such as Planning, Environmental Science, Architecture, etc.

• Three years of experience in research and planning projects related to land use and community resources.
Nice-to-haves
• Experience in local government or private practice in community planning and urban design.

• Familiarity with Maryland Planning initiatives and programs.

• Experience in project management and community engagement.

• Proficiency in office productivity software and GIS tools.
