Duties
Your role in this position will be to acquire and provide knowledge, concepts and methodologies in physical oceanography modelling, on behalf of the Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s objectives for ensuring the conservation of fisheries and aquatic resources, as well as providing safe and secure waterways. You will design and carry out independent, collaborative, and original scientific research and be responsible to provide scientific knowledge, data, information, analysis, advice and recommendations to scientists and managers within the Department and to other external organizations including the general public.
Specific aspects of the duties include:
• Contribute to the development of regional ocean models at basin, coastal and nearshore scales based on a state-of-the-art community ocean modelling platform;
• Improve the performance of existing regional models within Fisheries and Oceans Canada;
• Evaluate model performance through joint analysis of model results and observational data;
• Lead or collaborate with scientists participating in related research and development projects;
• Provide external collaborators with technical support and advice;
• Write peer-reviewed scientific articles and prepare scientific documents for publication in the form of in-house technical notes and presentations.
Work environment
Located on the shores of the Bedford Basin in Dartmouth Nova Scotia, the Bedford Institute of Oceanography – also known as BIO – is Canada’s largest centre for multi-disciplinary ocean research. The Institute performs targeted research to provide peer-reviewed advice and support to government decision making on a broad range of ocean issues, including sovereignty, safety and security, environmental protection, the health of the oceans, safe and accessible waterways, the sustainable use of natural resources (fisheries, minerals, oil & gas) and the integrated management of large ocean management areas.
In order to be considered, your application must clearly explain how you meet the following (essential qualifications)
Education
• Graduation with an acceptable Doctoral Degree from a recognized university with a specialization in physical oceanography or in a related discipline with pertinent experience in physical oceanography modelling.
Experience:
• Experience in conducting independent research in the modelling in physical oceanography using primitive equation ocean models running parallel processing computers (Graduate school research for M.Sc. or Ph.D. thesis is not considered sufficient to meet this criteria).
• Experience in research and development using structured grid ocean models such as, but not limited to, NEMO, ROMS, MOM, POP, MITgcm.
• Experience in using observations for the purposes of model analysis or verification.
• A minimum of two years postdoctoral or work experience doing independent research in physical oceanography or ocean modelling.
• Experience in presenting research findings at scientific workshops or meetings.
• Experience in authoring scientific publications in international peer-reviewed journals with at least two papers in the last 5 years including at least one as the lead author in physical oceanography or ocean modelling.

– Knowledge of the basic principles and practices in numerical modelling;
– Knowledge of the basic principles and methods of data analysis.

– Ability to analyze science issues and provide advice and recommendations;
– Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English;
– Ability to plan, organize and establish priorities;
