Position: Organic Farm Assistant: Herbs, Conservation and Agritourism

Farm/Organization: Hearts Content Organic Farm

Location: between Brantford & Hamilton on the rail trail

Housing: Optional rental (furnished suite) / we may be able to help you with reduced rental costs, relocating and/or travel.

Eligibility: Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or refugee, between 18 and 30 years

Hearts Content Organic Farm is a small organic farm along the Brantford to Dundas rail trail. We specialize in herbs, farmstay and conservation.

Richard is a retired naturopathic doctor who specializes in herbs, wildcraft and making value added herbal products (salves, lip balms, dried herbs). Ella is a retired professor of Sociology of Environment and Health. Her passion is conservation (restoring wetlands, and planting shelterbelts, mini-forest, and pollinators) and protecting farmland.

We are very dedicated to fostering an inclusive community.

We...
• grow organic crops (e.g. medicinal & edible herbs, pollinators, berries & nuts),
• do wildcrafting - harvesting herbs to dry for sale to an herbal company,
• make value added products such as dried herbs, salves & lip balms,
• host farmstay (camping, glamping, and accessible suites),
• work on conservation projects (restoring wetlands, planting trees),
• work to protect farmland, natural areas, and water,
• promote ecotourism with bird and plant walks, and
• rescue and redistribute organic food, with a focus on migrant farm workers and seniors.

Job Description:

You would be involved in helping with the following:
• planting, cultivating & harvesting organic crops
• wildcrafting – harvesting and drying herbs,
• making value added products such as dried herbs, salves & lip balms,
• helping with caring for the grounds, campsites and farmstay units,
• planting and caring for trees and shrubs,
• assisting with birding and plant walks,
• sorting and redistributing rescued organic food,
• working to protect farmland, natural areas, and water, and
• outreach and social media.
• Light carpentry work

Job Requirements:

This is a physically demanding job, working indoors and outdoors.

We are looking to hire someone who
• has a healthy and positive attitude,
• can work alone or with others,
• has some farming or hands-on conservation experience, and
• is highly motivated, and who has skills with work related farming and tree care.

We will provide mentoring and work with you.

Term: Mid-April to mid-October

Eligibility: Must be between 18 & 30 years old.

Pay: $22/hour, 35 hours/week

Benefits: rescued organic fruits and vegetables, 4% vacation pay

Schedule: flexible 7-hour day shift, Monday to Friday, occasional weekends

Assets: Spanish speaking, experience with driving a tractor, comfortable using small tools and equipment, driver’s license, experience operating a chain saw, pruning

Experience: 1 year of related work

Ability to commute or relocate before starting work (required).
