Research Assistant - Agricultural Field Operations
Job Description:
• Assist with planting, maintenance, and harvesting of research plot trials at University of Florida IFAS research farm and cooperating farms in the Suwannee Valley region.
• Conduct soil, tissue, water, and pest diagnostic sampling for row crops and vegetables, including greenhouse hydroponics.
• Collect, organize, and accurately enter research data into spreadsheets and online platforms.
• Communicate with farm managers, producers, and staff to coordinate on-farm activities.
• Participate in planning and execution of Extension field days and other events for farmers and the public.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the mission of NFREC-SV.
Responsibilities:
• Cultivate and maintain large and small research plots under the supervision of senior researchers.
• Design and implement soil, water, and nutrient management strategies for optimal crop growth.
• Analyze and interpret data from various sources, including soil tests, plant tissue analysis, and weather station readings.
• Develop and maintain relationships with local farmers, cooperators, and stakeholders to facilitate knowledge transfer and extension services.
• Contribute to the development of educational materials, publications, and presentations for agricultural professionals and the general public.
• Participate in workshops, conferences, and training sessions to stay current with best practices in agricultural research and extension.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
• 1-2 years of experience in agricultural research, extension, or a related field.
• Valid driver's license and ability to operate farm equipment.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Master's degree in Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
• Experience with precision agriculture, drones, or other emerging technologies in agriculture.
• Knowledge of sustainable agriculture practices, organic farming, or regenerative agriculture.
• Fluency in Spanish or other languages spoken in the region.
