Nps / Historic Preservation Training Center – Monuments And Masonry Member – Individual Placement

The NPS / Historic Preservation Training Center is offering an individual placement as a Monuments and Masonry Member with Conservation Legacy in Frederick, MD. This role involves learning historic preservation techniques, assisting with masonry and bronze conservation projects, and requires travel. Participants will work on preserving national parks and historic structures, gaining hands-on experience in project management and preservation skills.
Purpose


Stewards Individual Placements (Stewards), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with internships service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health.


This opportunity is brought in partnership with the NPS Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC) which is dedicated to the safe preservation and maintenance of national parks or partner facilities by demonstrating outstanding leadership, delivering quality preservation services, and developing educational courses that fulfill the competency requirements of service employees in the career fields of Historic Preservation Skills, Risk Management, Maintenance, and Planning, Design, and Construction.


HPTC utilizes historic preservation projects as the main vehicle for teaching preservation philosophy and building crafts, technology, and project management skills. Our experiential learning approach emphasizes flexibility in addressing the unknown conditions encountered during the project and ensures that the goals of preservation are met.


Historic structures and features in our national parks are constantly in need of thoughtful and careful preservation, repair, and maintenance. By assisting and working alongside HPTC on these preservation projects the Intern will directly improve the physical conditions of a nationally significant park space that is accessed and enjoyed by thousands of visitors a year.


This member position will be assigned to the Monuments Section within the Historic Preservation Training Center of the National Park Service. Member will learn monument preservation activities, such as how to appropriately clean historic masonry and bronze, masonry repairs such as removing and replacing mortar joints, patching and crack injection repairs, and bronze conservation work. Projects vary greatly and are dependent upon the site where participants work. Travel will be required. Member may be placed with Monuments or Masonry sections.


Description of Duties



Learning basic historic preservation activities such as masonry and metal cleaning, removing failed or deteriorated mortar joints, repointing mortar joints with compatible mortar mixes, and bronze conservation treatment.
Transporting materials to job sites, assisting with project set-up, including setting up site protection and scaffolding
Clean masonry and bronze elements for monuments and historic structures by safely utilizing pressure washer and chemical treatment.
Use hammers and chisels to carefully remove mortar joints and repoint mortar joints
Use of hand tools, mixing and installing mortar
Hot and cold waxing bronze sculptures
Use a propane torch and apply wax to a heated sculpture
Mixing patching material and installing patching material, mixing crack injection grout and installing crack injection material

Qualifications



United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
Must be 18-30 years of age, maximum 35 for Veterans with DD-214.
Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school.
Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
Prior experience in trades or construction is preferred, but not required.
Open to current students and recent grads of historic preservation programs, previous TTAP members, and other applicants with backgrounds education or experience in historic trades.
Ability to commit to a 26-week experience of combined training and hands-on work.
Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required.
Climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
Interest in traditional trades or historic preservation.
Driver’s License & personal transportation will be required to report to job site.
Operates as a good team member within work crew and follow daily direction.
Follow HPTC’s project agreement and safety plan
Be respectful of all members or crew and supervisor staff.

Time requirements



This position is expected to serve 40 hours each week with opportunity for overtime. Exact service schedules may vary.
Frequent travel for extended periods will be a requirement for this position. Selected members should expect to arrange and cover travel expenses up front before submitting for reimbursement.

Member will receive an orientation that includes training on a variety of preservation techniques.

Pay Rate of $18 – $20/hr (dependent on experience)
