Job Description
Colorado State University is hiring a Natural Resources Technician for a seasonal, full-time position based out of Hill Air Force Base in Utah. The role involves conducting wildlife and vegetation surveys, maintaining equipment, and performing administrative duties. The technician will travel to various Air Force bases and may require overnight stays, with housing typically provided. Candidates should be pursuing a relevant degree and have a valid driver's license.
A Natural Resources Technician (Seasonal Worker, Full-time, 40 hours/week)
position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). The position will be based out of Hill Air Force Base (AFB) in Utah and will travel to support properties managed by Hill AFB, Mountain Home AFB in Idaho, and Fairchild AFB in Washington. The Technician will assist Natural Resources Program personnel in providing support in upholding the Air Force’s mission.
Specific duties of the technician position include but are not limited to:
• Weekly travel to conduct natural resources surveys at the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR), approximately 1.5 hours from Hill AFB.
• Housing at the UTTR is typically provided during the work week.
• When space is available, Technician will have access to a private bedroom including a shared bathroom and kitchen area with one additional Technician at the Oasis Housing Facility located on the bombing range.
• In the rare event that facility housing is not available due to military personnel occupation (typically no longer a week at a time), the technician will be provided with a camping trailer or tent.
• Wildlife Surveys – avian point counts, mist netting and bird banding, eagle and raptor nest observations, burrowing owl nest observations, small mammal trapping, and herptile trapping.
• Vegetation Surveys – hybrid vegetation transects, and hoop vegetation transects.
• Camera Trapping – wildlife guzzler cameras and kit fox scent stations.
• Equipment Maintenance/Facility – wildlife guzzler installation, wildlife guzzler preservation, campground maintenance, hiking trail upkeep, and survey equipment maintenance.
• Office Administrative Duties – digitally record new data, convert historic paper records into electronic copies, and some geoprocessing using ArcGIS.
• Overnight travel to other properties managed by Hill, Mountain Home, and Fairchild AFBs.
• Up to 50% travel time may be required.
• All travel expenses paid; Technician will be issued a travel credit card for reimbursements.
Minimum Requirements:
• Must have an interest in pursuing a career in federal lands management.
• Must be physically capable of working independently in outdoor locations under varying weather conditions.
• Pursuing a B.S. in natural resources-, cultural resources-, ecosystem science-, or environmental policy-related field (at least a senior standing).
• Experience using Microsoft Office Suite.
• Must have a valid driver’s license for operating federal vehicles.
• Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a Department of Defense Installation Access Pass.
• The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. citizenship; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

Hill Air Force Base (AFB) is located between Ogden and Salt Lake City. The area is known for year-round activities, including skiing, hiking, boating, extreme sports, fishing and hunting, with four distinct seasons, low humidity, and moderate snowfall in the valley. From Hobson House and the historic railroad shop on Hill AFB to archaeological sites on the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR), the Cultural Resources Program at Hill AFB manages resources on nearly one million acres of land in locations that span three states, including Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada. The Air Force has a dual mission of maintaining national defense while protecting historic buildings, archaeological sites, artifacts, and other resources that are important to our national heritage as required by federal law.
