Job Description
The Center for Earth, Energy and Democracy is seeking a National Environmental Justice (EJ) Organizer for a remote, full-time role. The organizer will develop and implement federal organizing strategies, engage over 300 grassroots co-signers, and strengthen relationships within the Equitable and Just National Climate Forum. The position involves fostering community, promoting justice and equity, and collaborating with various teams to advance environmental justice initiatives.

National Environmental Justice (EJ) Organizer, Full – Time Exempt (Remote)
Reports to: EJNCF Senior Project Director
Who We Are
CEED is a 501c3 nonprofit organization based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. CEED conducts research and provides community education on important energy, environment, and community development issues so that all members of society may effectively participate in public decision-making. CEED also provides staffing and leadership to the Equitable and Just National Climate Platform (ajustclimate.org) and several regional and local environmental justice coalitions such as the Mid-West EJ Network. CEED was a key player in the founding of both.
Equitable and Just National Climate Forum
CEED also provides staffing and leadership to the Equitable and Just National Climate Forum. The Equitable and Just National Climate Forum (EJNCF) was launched in 2018 to bring leaders from environmental justice organization together with national environmental groups to:
● support progress toward trust building, alignment and collaboration between environmental justice (EJ) and national group leaders;
● identify pathways for more inclusive national climate policy development to support EJ and national group advocates working together to advance shared policy goals and ideas.
A core priority of the EJNCF is to engage and mobilize Platform co-signers and partners around EJNCF goals for the year. The co-signers of EJNCP are organizations and individuals from a variety of backgrounds across various geographies who have resonated with the EJNCP vision and committed to align themselves with the values laid out in the EJNCP.
Summary of Position
As a member of the CEED team, the National Environmental Justice (EJ) Organizer will help create and implement CEED’s federal organizing strategies. The National EJ Organizer will be tasked with strengthening Equitable and National Climate Forum’s (EJNCF) member cultivation efforts, engaging and building relationships with a 300 plus co-signers of grassroots organizations nationally to take action in the fight against pollution, climate change, environmental racism and amplifying the EJNCF’s goals of justice and equity. They will act as a strategist and thought partner for EJNCF co-signers to build community, to learn and grow together as equity-focused advocates.
This work will be undertaken in collaboration with multiple teams within CEED and the role will split their time between multiple project areas:
Primary Responsibilities
● Lead efforts to conceptualize, implement and assess strategies to engage 300 plus co-signers to the EJNCF, with a focus on building a more diverse and inclusive community that advances the overarching justice and equity goals of the EJNCF.
● Lead efforts to develop and implement community-building strategies, to foster connection and peer-learning among co-signers.
● Work with CEED staff to co-develop cultivation and recruitment strategies for EJNCF and
support building EJNCF membership.
● Build relationships with national coalitions (labor unions, faith-based groups, public health groups, etc.) to work in partnerships to advance shared goals.
● Work closely with policy and education teams within CEED to support education efforts for
federal issue campaigns that engage CEED grassroots partners.
Organizational Responsibilities
● Ensure that CEED’s policy advocacy efforts align with the mission and vision of CEED and in service to the environmental justice movement.
● Establish and maintain trusting, collaborative and transparent relationships with CEED’s
grassroots partners.
Knowledge and Skills
● Demonstrated interest in understanding the environmental justice movement nationally and key environmental justice concerns.
● Demonstrated leadership skills, including project and program management ability.
● Demonstrated ability to collaboratively develop and execute strategy at an organizational level
● Outstanding oral and written communications skills.
Experience
● Minimum 7 years in grassroots community, issue labor organizing programs and/or network building and management.
● Successful track record of grassroots community organizing, leadership development,
implementing strategies and tactics and forming alliances with other groups.
● Ability to effectively work as part of a team and in community.
● Ability to effectively present programs to the community, elected officials and allies in an
effective way.
● Committed to confronting institutional racism and inequity within our political system. An ability to apply a racial justice lens, and a variety of communities’ distinct perspectives to organizing strategies.
● A commitment to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture as well as
understanding the ways in which principles of racial justice and equity are vital to improving our democratic systems and environmental challenges effectively.

Salary and Benefits
Salary range is $75,000 - $85,000, depending on experience. 100% employer paid medical, dental, vision, short - and long-term disability and life insurance policies. Employer-paid monthly contributions to a Health Savings Account. 11 holidays, 10 sick days, paid vacation time and other perks. The CEED Office is closed for one week in July and December as an organization-wide break. Flexible work schedule.
