Position Summary

They are seeking a talented Mechanical Engineer specializing in HVAC systems design for sustainable buildings to join their Los Angeles team. The ideal candidate will have expertise in designing high-performance mechanical systems that optimize energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and contribute to green building certifications while ensuring occupant comfort and wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities
• Design innovative HVAC systems for sustainable commercial, institutional, and residential buildings
• Perform heating and cooling load calculations using industry-standard software
• Develop energy models to optimize system performance and sustainability metrics
• Create detailed mechanical drawings, specifications, and construction documents
• Select appropriate HVAC equipment based on efficiency, performance, and sustainability criteria
• Design ventilation systems that maximize indoor air quality while minimizing energy consumption
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including architects, electrical engineers, and sustainability consultants
• Ensure compliance with local and state building codes, including California Title 24 energy requirements
• Contribute to LEED, WELL, and Net Zero Energy certification processes
• Conduct site assessments and field verifications during construction
• Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and CAD technicians
• Oversee commissioning processes to ensure systems perform as designed
• Present design concepts and solutions to clients and stakeholders

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field (Master's degree preferred)
• 5+ years of experience in HVAC design for commercial or institutional buildings
• Demonstrated expertise in sustainable building systems and energy-efficient design
• Proficiency in energy modeling software (eQUEST, Client, Trane TRACE, etc.)
• Strong knowledge of HVAC design software (Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP)
• Experience with California-specific building codes and Title 24 energy standards
• Familiarity with ASHRAE standards and guidelines
• Understanding of renewable energy integration with HVAC systems
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
• Strong communication and client relationship abilities

Preferred Skills/Experience
• LEED AP Client+C or WELL AP certification
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in California
• Experience with passive design strategies and natural ventilation
• Knowledge of radiant heating and cooling systems
• Background in designing VRF/VRV systems and heat recovery applications
• Experience with geothermal system design
• Familiarity with thermal energy storage solutions
• Understanding of building automation systems and smart building technologies
• Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for airflow analysis
• Project management experience
• Knowledge of embodied carbon considerations in mechanical systems
