The role involves developing and optimizing materials for carbon capture, collaborating with research and engineering teams, and leading projects from prototyping to implementation. Candidates should have an advanced degree in a relevant field or significant professional experience. The position requires hands-on work in laboratories and CO2 capture facilities.
Materials Scientist job at Noya Labs. Oakland, CA.

Noya is reversing climate change by removing CO2 from the atmosphere. We’re a scrappy team of engineers, scientists, and operators taking on the biggest problem anybody could be working on. We’ve developed a process that leverages abundant materials to remove CO2 directly from the air with dramatically lower capital and operating expenses than other approaches.
WHAT THIS ROLE IS

This role is fundamental to the short, medium, and long-term success of our mission. Your materials science and engineering expertise will help Noya capture even more carbon dioxide in a sustainable, cost-effective way!

As a Materials Scientist at Noya, you will be leading activities to implement our sorbent strategy. Your technical expertise will be applied to the optimization, fabrication, analysis, and manufacturing scale-up of our novel sorbent approach with the ultimate goal of installing thousands of sorbent building blocks at our first commercial site. You will participate in and occasionally lead company-wide discussions and brainstorming sessions to develop the best materials in the world to help our planet reverse climate change. You will then work with the research, chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering teams to take these ideas from prototyping all the way through to implementation with the goal of capturing multiple tonnes of CO2 per day.

And on top of all that, you will dive head-first into a sea of future potential full of unimaginable growth opportunities. Ultimately, we are looking for a diligent and driven Engineer or Scientist who wants to help solidify a bright future for all of humanity.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
• Develop new direct air carbon capture materials in conjunction with the research and engineering teams.
• A “self-starter” attitude in an individual who is able to define their own priorities and optimization pathways.
• Develop and implement testing protocols to evaluate the properties of new and currently-employed materials.
• Creatively identify and implement theoretical and practical opportunities in sorbent development and deployment for the next generation of Noya’s technology while contributing to Noya’s intellectual property portfolio.
• Optimize the electrical, mechanical, and chemical properties of Noya’s sorbent materials by utilizing your mastery of first principles and best research practices.
• Collaborate with the research and engineering teams at Noya to run experiments, integrate new materials into our process design, build new systems and infrastructure, test materials and approaches, and communicate results. Noya is very cross-disciplinary!
• Lead efforts to augment and apply Noya’s sorbent materials in pilot and industrial-scale CO2 capture facilities.
• Spend time in the laboratory, on the shop floor, and in remote CO2 capture facilities when technology is being installed and tested. We all get our hands dirty at Noya!
• Conduct literature reviews and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in materials science.
• Continuously grow and learn in your role within the team as new breakthroughs occur.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
• Advanced degree in Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or an adjacent STEM field OR 5 years of applied science professional experience in similar fields.
• Previous experience in a materials science, laboratory setting including design and execution of experiments, and generation of new research ideas/projects.
• Understanding of materials manufacturing processes including synthesis at the lab, extrusion, calcination, and impregnation at high volumes.
• Expertise in installation, maintenance, operation, and data analysis associated with the following analytical instruments and techniques: adsorption and dynamic breakthrough instruments, XRD, SEM-EDS, XPS, TGA, DSC, FT-IR, Raman Spectrometry, Particle Size Analysis.
• Unparalleled laboratory notebook, written, and verbal communication practices.
• Experience in scaling up technical materials from prototyping to small/medium manufacturing.
• Working knowledge of condensed matter physics, electrochemistry, and solution phase chemistry.
• Strong desire to learn about and develop groundbreaking climate technologies - from concept to multi-tonne-scale implementation.
• Comfort with the construction, operation, and maintenance of home-built instruments and non-routine laboratory equipment.
• Good chemical safety, organization, and waste disposal practices.
• Curiosity, tenacity, and adaptability. At Noya, every day brings new challenges and opportunities and measurable progress occurs quickly!

NICE TO HAVE
• Advanced Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or an adjacent STEM field.
• Experience at a pilot plant or with large-scale projects.
• An understanding of extrusion and extrusion techniques.
• Past experience with ceramics and/or catalyst production.
• Experience with lifecycle analysis (LCA) optimization.

BENEFITS YOU CAN EXPECT
• Blue Shield and Kaiser medical plans, plus 100% employer-sponsored dental, vision, life and LTD coverage
• Generous stock option compensation
• 401(k) with company match
• PTO including the week off between Christmas and New Years
• Healthy snacks and lunch from local restaurants
• Amazing workplace to build first-of-a-kind Direct Air Capture technology, close to West Oakland coffee shops and restaurants
• The opportunity to work towards an impactful mission in the climate space
