The role involves collaborating with data scientists and economists to conduct analyses, develop simulation tools, and automate workflows. Candidates should have a Master’s or Ph.D. in a relevant field, experience with power system simulation tools, and proficiency in programming languages. The position offers a hybrid work schedule with 3 days onsite.
ISO New England is the independent system operator responsible for ensuring the safe and reliable flow of electricity in our region and planning for the future of the electric grid. We are at the forefront of New England’s ongoing transition to clean energy.
The IMM is responsible for evaluating the competitiveness and efficiency of the region’s wholesale electricity markets, identifying potential market violations, and mitigating the effects of uncompetitive behavior to protect both consumers and market participants. As the energy system transitions to lower-carbon technologies, market monitoring complexity is increasing due to growing integration of small-scale generation, behind-the-meter resources, and energy storage.
As a member of the Market Monitoring team, you will collaborate with data scientists, economists, and market analysts to conduct analyses and develop advanced tools supporting our core functions. You'll apply your expertise in energy markets, simulation, optimization, data analytics, and programming to investigate complex wholesale market and power system issues.
What We Offer You

• Relocation Assistance
• Base salary plus performance bonus program, professional development and tuition reimbursement, enhanced 401k and financial planning, wellness programs with onsite gym, onsite café with free coffee, flexible work hours, access to business networks & more, all in a stable and supportive work environment!
How You Will Make An Impact
• Establish and maintain a suite of in-house and vendor-supported market and power system simulation tools.
• Conduct simulation and optimization studies to support performance assessments and policy/design evaluations, including market power and root cause analyses.
• Perform benchmarking, scenario modeling, and stochastic simulations, collaborating with team members to prepare and validate input datasets.
• Evaluate simulation outputs, produce insightful reports, present findings to stakeholders, and automate workflows to improve efficiency and reproducibility.
• Design, implement, and maintain dynamic dashboards and data visualization tools to support simulation and market monitoring reports.
• Create visualizations that highlight patterns, trends, and outliers in large-scale energy market datasets.
• Develop and maintain data pipelines, perform ETL operations, and conduct data cleaning and integrity checks across diverse data sources.
• Collaborate on cloud-based machine learning projects and document technical specifications to recommend new tools for improved performance and architecture.
What You Need To Be Successful In This Role
• Master’s or Ph.D. in Operations Research, Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and additional years of experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree.
• Solid understanding of electricity market design and power system operations.
• Experience with power system simulation tools (e.g., PLEXOS, AURORA, GE MARS).
• Knowledge of optimization techniques and experience tuning models using solvers such as CPLEX or GUROBI.
• Proficiency in programming languages and tools such as Python, R, SAS, MATLAB, and/or GAMS.
• Experience with SQL and developing and maintaining relational databases and large datasets.
• Familiarity with data visualization platforms (e.g., Shiny, Tableau, Power BI).
• Experience working with a Unix/Linux environment.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to present technical insights to non-technical audiences.
This is a U.S. based role. If the successful candidate resides outside of the U.S., relocation will be required.
