Job Description

Battelle Memorial Institute is hiring a Marine and Oceanography Environmental Scientist in Norwell, MA. The role involves supporting environmental characterization projects, conducting field sampling, and managing health and safety procedures. Job Summary

We are seeking a Marine and Oceanography Environmental Scientist to support complex environmental characterization projects focusing on marine and freshwater sediments, water, biota, and other environmental components.
Responsibilities:
• Participate in physical field sampling activities throughout the United States.
• Conduct environmental field activities, including collecting environmental samples, overseeing subcontractors, and enforcing health and safety procedures, to investigate contamination in soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, soil gas, and air.
• Identify and acquire all materials, equipment, and resources needed to effectively implement the required field scope of work at the project site.
• Communicate and coordinate field activities with field teams, project managers, and client representatives.
• Maintain accountability for all on-site activities, including staff health and safety, field records, sample custody, and safety observations.
• Follow procedures to conduct a variety of field activities and document technical data.
• Collect, record, and manage field and sample data while following data quality requirements.
Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Engineering, Geology, or a related field.
• Experience working in challenging environmental and physical conditions, such as heat, cold, wind, rough seas, small boats, wading, and carrying heavy loads.
• Experience working on boats both inland and offshore waters.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to trouble-shoot mechanical and electrical problems with equipment that occur in the field.
• Ability to obtain 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER and 8-hour annual refresher certification, adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation, standard first aid, and automated external defibrillator certification.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Direct and manage remediation contractors, including environmental investigations and remediation system construction.
• Experience with soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, indoor air, and soil-gas contamination investigation and remediation projects, including techniques and equipment utilized on such projects.
