Job Description
The National Capital Commission is seeking a Manager, Sustainable Development in Ontario, Canada. This role involves managing sustainability strategies, policies, and projects while collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. Candidates should have a degree in Environmental Sciences or related fields and 5-8 years of experience in sustainable development. The position requires site visits and the ability to provide leadership and coordinate efforts across various teams.
A list of qualified people may be compiled and may be used for additional temporary or indeterminate positions.
JOB OVERVIEW
As a Manager, Sustainable Development, you will provide professional services and subject-matter expertise related to sustainability and the legislated requirements applicable to the National Capital Commission (NCC). You will manage the development of strategies, policies, action plans, projects and guidelines for NCC's corporate sustainable development commitments. You will collaborate and liaise with internal partners to optimize processes and ensure the consistent integration of sustainability measures across NCC business lines. You will engage and collaborate with external stakeholders to lead discussions on strategic cross-cutting issues that will build a more sustainable National Capital Region.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION
A degree from a recognized post-secondary institution with specialization in Environmental Sciences/Studies/Engineering, Building Sciences or Geography, or an acceptable combination of education, training and experience.
EXPERIENCE
Five (5) to eight (8) years of experience in the sustainable development or environmental management fields, including the following:
Managing, developing and implementing strategies, action plans and guidelines to advance sustainable development priorities.
Managing research and analysis activities to evaluate strategies, policies, legislation and directives.
Providing expertise, advice, and guidance to internal and external stakeholders.
KNOWLEDGE
Of sustainable development principles, environmental strategies, policies and relevant legislation.
Of best practices in project management and contracts negotiation.
Of engagement techniques to collect key stakeholders feedback, address concerns and build trust.
ABILITIES
To identify risks and emerging trends and provide actionable insights to support decision-making.
To resolve problems, ensure the successful delivery of sustainability goals, and alignment with the needs, priorities and programs of other teams.
To present progress toward strategies, action plans, and projects.
To establish priorities, organize work to respond to multiple demands and cope with conflicting priorities.
To provide leadership and coordinate the work of others.

ASSETS
Experience with the development and implementation of climate action plans and guidelines, including energy management, charting a path to net-zero emissions, climate vulnerability and risk assessment, etc.
Experience in community energy plans and/or district energy systems.
Knowledge of Canada Green Building Zero Carbon Standard, LEED certification programs, One Planet Living, Passive House certification and/or comparable rating systems.
Knowledge of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy and/or Greening Government Strategy.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Occasionally required to visit sites to review progress of work.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
Possess or eligible to obtain Reliability security clearance.
Linguistic profile: Bilingual CBC.
Position is in the National Capital Region. The person selected for this position must reside within a commutable distance from the workplace at 40 Elgin Street, Ottawa, Ontario.
