Job Description
Digby Wells Environmental is seeking a Manager, Social Sciences in East London, South Africa. The role involves managing the Social Sciences team, overseeing project management, financial operations, and business development. Key responsibilities include strategic growth, client management, and maintaining stakeholder relationships. Candidates should have a postgraduate degree, at least five years of relevant experience in mining and consulting, and strong leadership and communication skills.
Manager, Social Sciences (Mining)

Key Responsibilities:
Requirements
• Provide strategic growth and direction for the department.
• Effectively manage and review projects using the organisation’s methodology and principles ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and against our quality standards.
• Act as a key accounts manager for designated clients through regular meetings, networking, and fulfilling a project sponsor role.
• Provide project reporting and analytics to relevant stakeholders on the department’s progress.
• Effective financial management of the department’s operations, this includes budgeting, forecasting, analysis etc.
• Effective people management this includes, development, recruitment, coaching and mentoring, disciplining, succession planning and performance management.
• Grow our market share through upselling and cross selling the organisation’s services to new and existing clients.
• Build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Management of workload schedules for the department thereby ensuring effecting workforce planning can be undertaken.
• Research new technological and legal developments and trends and communicate this to relevant stakeholders.
• Manage the development, growth, and technical output of the Social Sciences Services departments.
• Provide specialist studies that integrate into the ESIA process as well as standalone specialist products.
• Carry out fieldwork under strenuous conditions.
New Business Development
• Develop a business plan for the department which includes services and selling opportunities.
• Act as a key account manager where required, identifying business opportunities and ensuring that a client-centric approach is always maintained.
• Identify leads within the department and organise, plan, and track proposals in response.
• Co-ordinate and submit proposals.
• Carry out legal audits with regards to relevant legislation.
• Compile and write reports for submission to the client and necessary authorities.
• Actively participating in business development and marketing activities.
Requirements
Qualifications
• Postgraduate degree in the relevant field.
• A Project Management Certificate would be beneficial
Skills and Experience
• 5 or more years’ experience in the relevant field, preferably within the consulting environment would be beneficial.
• At least 5 years conducting specialist studies.
• At least five years working in the resources industry specifically mining
• 5 or more years’ experience in developing or project managing the following services:
• Socio-economic impact assessments,
• Resettlement action plans; and
• Local economic development plans.
• Specialist studies relating to ESIA processes.
• People Management principles.
• Project management.
• Financial Management (Such as budgeting, forecasting etc.).
• Customer Management.
• Strong Report Writing.
• Excellent mentorship and coaching skills.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written).
• Due to the nature of work a driver’s licence is essential.
Locations: London UK or Johannesburg South Africa or other DW locations
