Job Description
Southern Company is hiring a Manager, Corrosion Control to lead their corrosion control program from either Atlanta, GA or Naperville, IL. The role involves optimizing compliance with pipeline safety regulations, managing program budgets, and leading a team of managers and technicians. The ideal candidate has a degree in engineering or equivalent experience, with at least 5 years in utility or pipeline operations and strong leadership skills.
The position is flexible to sit in either Atlanta, GA or Naperville, IL.
The Manager, Corrosion Control sets program direction and provides technical leadership for the Company’s corrosion control program. As a strategic lead for one of the nation’s leading and largest multi-state gas utilities, the Manager, Corrosion Control optimizes programs for compliance with federal and state pipeline safety rules in four states covering over 75,000 miles of distribution, storage and transmission pipelines and related infrastructure. The Company operates natural gas local distribution companies in Georgia (Atlanta Gas Light), Illinois (Nicor Gas Company), Tennessee (Chattanooga Gas Company), and Virginia (Virginia Natural gas).
JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Business Execution
• Implement and optimize corrosion control program, ensuring alignment with state and federal regulatory requirements and internal standards.
• Monitor and anticipate changes in regulatory requirements, collaborating with stakeholders to adapt policies and enhance processes.
• Demonstrate technical leadership by monitoring corrosion control program data to identify trends and implement programs to improve performance.
• Establish and manage program budgets.
• Prioritize and build business cases for strategic investments to maintain system integrity.
• Regular reporting of business analytics (Key Performance Indicators, Program Status, Financial Variance Reporting, Current Issues).
Relationships and Networking
• Facilitate engagement between internal and external stakeholders (e.g. TIMP, DIMP, PMs, GIS, Procurement, Engineering, Operations, Contractors, etc.) to ensure efficient and effective operations.
• Selection and qualification of third-party service providers in the areas of corrosion services including survey, cathodic protection systems, bridge inspection, AC mitigation, etc.
• Development and administration of contracts with external suppliers
Innovation
• Evaluate and recommend new equipment, technology, and processes to benefit the Company.
• Stay updated on technical advancements and industry trends to improve efficiency, meet workforce needs, and comply with regulations.
Development of Others
• Lead a team of 4 - 6 Managers and Engineers (direct reports) and 35 – 40 Corrosion Control Technicians (indirect reports) across multiple states.
• Foster technical development and proficiency among departmental personnel.
Qualifications
Education, Certifications/Licenses:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related technical field
OR
• Equivalent technical and practical experience with 10+ years of experience in managing corrosion control programs associated with transmission and distribution pipeline systems.
Preferred:
• NACE CP2 – Cathodic Protection Technician or Higher
• NACE Corrosion Technician or Higher Certification
• NACE Coating Inspection Certification
Related Work Experience:
Required:
• 5+ years utility or pipeline engineering and operations experience
• Demonstrated experience in leading and mentoring teams, with a focus on achieving organizational goals and continuous improvement
Preferred:
• Internal corrosion control program development and management
• Underground storage and gathering main experience
• 3+ years supervisory experience
• Experience managing employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement
Specific Skills & Knowledge:
Required:
• Attention to Detail and Analytical Capability: Demonstrates meticulous attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
• Data Analysis: Possesses expertise in data analysis and methodologies and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
• Regulatory Compliance and Industry Standards: Proficient in understanding and applying regulatory codes and industry standards (e.g., 49 CFR 192, ASME B31.8).
• Project Management and Prioritization: Successfully manages multiple projects and priorities concurrently.
• Microsoft Office Proficiency: Skilled in using Microsoft Office applications.
• Effective Communication and Presentation: Communicates effectively and delivers compelling presentations.
• Technical Writing: Proficient in writing technical documentation.
• Service-Oriented Approach and Stakeholder Education: Demonstrates a service provider mentality and can educate internal and external stakeholders on basic Transmission Integrity concepts.
Preferred:
• Pipeline Compliance System (PCS) proficiency
• Maximo and Oracle Proficiency
• Geographic Information System (GIS) proficiency
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
• Occasional travel (5 – 20%)
• The incumbent primarily works in an office environment.
• Occasional trips to the field with possible exposure to the following:
• moving mechanical parts
• fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals
• varying outdoor weather conditions
• excessive noise
• construction related activities
• prolonged standing or walking
