Job Description

Varaha is seeking a Manager - Carbon Projects in Gurugram, Haryana, to lead Verra-certified afforestation and reforestation projects. The role involves estimating and verifying carbon sequestration, conducting biomass assessments, and ensuring compliance with carbon standards. Key responsibilities include data analysis, field measurements, and collaboration with various stakeholders. Candidates should have a PhD in a related field and experience in forestry research, with a willingness to travel frequently to project sites.
We are looking for a highly qualified Carbon Forestry Specialist to lead the technical aspects of our Verra-certified afforestation, reforestation, and revegetation (ARR) projects. This role involves developing and applying scientific methods to estimate, monitor, and verify carbon sequestration in forestry systems. You will be responsible for conducting carbon stock quantification, growth modeling, and ex-ante/ex-post carbon calculations, ensuring compliance with Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodologies.

This position requires frequent travel to project sites for field measurements, plantation assessments, and monitoring activities. You will collaborate with field teams, biometricians, carbon verification experts, and research institutions to ensure the scientific robustness of our carbon credit generation process.

Key Responsibilities
• Carbon Stock Quantification Biomass Assessment: Implement methodologies to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB), belowground biomass (BGB), soil organic carbon (SOC), and deadwood/litter carbon pools.
• Allometric Equation Development: Develop and refine species-specific biomass equations to improve the accuracy of carbon sequestration estimates.
• Ex-Ante Ex-Post Carbon Calculations: Conduct pre-plantation carbon sequestration modeling and validate actual removals through periodic field measurements.
• Plantation Growth Modeling: Design and optimize species selection, planting densities, and silvicultural practices to enhance carbon sequestration potential.
• Sample Plot Establishment Monitoring: Oversee the setup and maintenance of Permanent Sample Plots (PSPs), ensuring rigorous data collection and quality control.
• Forest Biometrics Statistical Analysis: Apply biometric techniques to analyze tree growth, mortality rates, sequestration dynamics, and thinning cycles.
• Stakeholder Certification Engagement: Coordinate with third-party validation bodies, forestry research institutions, and carbon project developers to ensure compliance with Verra methodologies.
• Field Travel Site Monitoring: Conduct frequent site visits to assess project implementation, supervise field teams, and ensure accurate on-ground data collection.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
• Technical Expertise: Strong foundation in forest biometrics, silviculture, and carbon quantification. Expertise in growth modeling and plantation design is a must.
• Analytical Skills: Proficiency in data analysis and statistical modeling to support biomass estimation and carbon stock projections.
• Field Research Experience: Hands-on experience in sample plot establishment, forest inventories, and carbon stock measurement.

Programming Data Tools
• R (preferred) or Python for statistical analysis and biomass modeling.
• Familiarity with SPSS, Stata, or advanced Excel for biometric and growth data processing.

Travel Readiness: Willingness to spend significant time in field locations, conducting biomass assessments, soil carbon sampling, and monitoring plantation growth.

Educational Qualification Experience
• PhD in Forestry, Agroforestry, Environmental Science, Forest Biometrics, or a related field.
• At least 2–3 years of post-PhD experience in a National or international forestry research institute (e.g., ICAR, ICFRE, INRAE, CIRAD, EFI) or an organization working on carbon project development.
