The Senior Transportation Engineer at the Department of Transportation in Sacramento, CA, is responsible for supporting the Major Damage Restoration Program. Duties include coordinating recovery efforts for the State Highway System and adhering to Caltrans standards. Job Description and Duties
The Senior Transportation Engineer, under the general direction of the Supervising Engineer, Office of Recovery and Operations (ORO) Chief, is a specialist position responsible for performing a variety of professional engineering duties for the Division of Maintenance. Foremost among these duties is to support the Major Damage Restoration (MDR) Program. The Senior Engineer is responsible for responding to the needs of districts' efforts to recover and mitigate from damages to the State Highway System (SHS) assets and coordinate and collaborate with others to receive federal reimbursements. Performs various transportation engineering tasks by understanding and applying Caltrans standards, manuals, guidelines, policies, directives, and computer applications. As these duties necessitate, occasional trips to the field for training or assessment and inspection may be required. The position may support the Department Operations Center (DOC) during emergency response activities. The position is headquartered at the Sacramento Caltrans HQ Office, but may also be teleworked per current Caltrans telework guidelines. Must possess a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.

Working Conditions
Position located on 1120 N Street, Sacramento, CA, 95814.
The incumbent will work in a climate-controlled office under artificial light. However, due to periodic problems with the heating and air conditioning, the building temperature may fluctuate.
This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or
minimum of alternate range when applicable.
Special Requirements
The incumbent must possess a valid certificate of registration as a civil engineer issued by the California State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers.
SOQ Instructions
A specific Statement of Qualifications based upon the four statements below is required. The SOQ must be received to be considered for the position. It must not exceed a maximum of two pages, single-line spacing and Arial font (12 pt.)
The SOQ should explain the candidate’s experience and/or knowledge in the following areas:
1. Internal and external coordination, giving presentations and communicating effectively both orally and in writing.
2. Leading, training, and organizing the work of a multidisciplinary and diverse group of staff.
3. Disaster emergency response and recovery, or project delivery and maintenance of State Highway transportation systems.
4. Guide others outside of the office in a telework environment.
Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Knowledge of: Basic principles of physics, chemistry, and mathematics as applied to civil engineering; engineering surveying; hydrology and hydraulics; stress analysis; mechanics; strength of materials; properties and uses of engineering construction materials; methods and equipment of engineering construction; engineering economics.
Ability to: Do simple mapping and drafting and make neat and accurate computations and engineering notes; prepare reports; establish and maintain friendly and cooperative relations with those contacted in the course of the work; communicate effectively.
The incumbent must be skillful in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio, and Teams programs; Knowledge of FileMaker software is highly desirable, and must be able to take notes and provide concise meeting minutes.
