About This Opportunity

We are seeking a Lecturer with a strong background in teaching and research in Urban Planning, particularly one or more of the following areas: Planning Law and regulatory Frameworks, Master Planning, Statutory Planning, Urban Management and Governance, Infrastructure Planning (e.g. water, energy, digital). In this role, you will be responsible for teaching courses at the Bachelor and Master of Urban Planning levels.Coordination of courses and supervision of Higher Degree by Research students are also key components of this position. A key expectation of this position is the development and maintenance of strong connections with the planning profession, government agencies, and industry partners. You will work collaboratively on joint research and teaching initiatives that bridge academic inquiry and professional practice, helping to ensure our programs remain innovative, applied, and relevant.

We value interdisciplinary and collaborative research efforts and expect you to actively participate in research networks within and beyond the university, while building and running an effective research program aligned with School of Architecture, Design and Planning's key research areas.

Key responsibilities will include:
• Teaching: Contribute to developing new Urban Planning programs and course materials by consulting with advisors and stakeholders to ensure content is engaging and current. Teach in various settings, support innovative curriculum design, including online and alternative methods and coordinate courses, deliver lectures and assess student work. Continuously improve course quality to meet industry and academic standards, provide academic support to students, and apply relevant University teaching and learning policies.
• Research: Develop an independent or collaborative research program aimed at achieving national recognition and impact. Collaborate with colleagues and postgraduates on joint projects and competitive funding applications, often serving as a chief investigator. Actively seek, secure, and manage external research funding while maintaining a strong publication record in high-quality journals and conferences. Apply best practice research methodologies, prepare publications and reports, and engage in regular meetings to discuss project goals and outcomes.
• Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to supervising Honours and Higher Degree by Research students and oversee the recruitment, selection, and onboarding of staff in accordance with University policies. Manage employee performance through coaching, feedback, and training, while addressing conflicts and grievances in line with University procedures. Ensure accurate employee remuneration and benefits, coordinating with Human Resources as needed.
• Citizenship and Service: Actively build partnerships with colleagues, industry, government, professional bodies, and the wider community. Demonstrate leadership through mentoring, collaboration, and effective management of internal roles and decision-making. Support administrative functions, assist in covering academic duties during absences, and uphold the values of UQ in all activities.

About You
• Completed PhD in Urban Planning or closely related discipline.
• A growing profile in teaching and research in Urban Planning, with expertise on one or more of the following areas: Planning Law and regulatory Frameworks, Statutory Planning, Urban Management and Governance, Infrastructure Planning (e.g. water, energy, digital).
• A developing reputation and track record of publications in reputed refereed journals and presenting at conferences.
• Evidence of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing external research funding.
• Evidence of a high level of quality teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level across a variety of settings, including small and large groups, in person and online.
• Experience in course coordination and contribution to the development and continuous innovation of new programs, curriculum design and course material in the discipline area.
• A growing record of supervision of Honours and Research Higher Degree students to successful completion.
• Experience in meaningful internal service roles in conjunction with active contributions to external activities.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong connections with the planning profession, government agencies, and industry partners to support joint teaching initiatives, collaborative research, and real-world impact.
