Duke Energy seeks a Lead Engineer - Transmission SVC Relay Tech Support in Greenville, SC. This role involves providing technical support and guidance in protective relay schemes and Static Var Compensators (SVCs). The Lead Engineer will manage complex problems and lead others with minimal supervision. Candidates must have a relevant engineering degree and expertise in Relay Protection and Control or SVCs. Other locations in the Carolinas may be considered.

At the discretion of the hiring manager other locations in Duke Energy Carolinas (North/South Carolina) will also be considered.
The Lead Engineer is at the specialist level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve complex problems, manage work and provide leadership to others in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision and increased latitude for un-reviewed work. The Lead Engineer serves in lead roles providing guidance to others. They are also expected to have advanced skills and have the ability to work independently.
This position will provide SVC SME support and Relay Protection and Control SME support. Expertise in either area will be considered.
The Relay SME provides technical support and guidance to Regional Engineers, field crews, C&M Supervisors for issues associated with protective relay schemes, remote terminal units (RTUs), pilot protection schemes, digital fault recorders, line traps, transformer gauges, instrument transformers (secondary-side only), and other equipment used to protect, monitor, and control Generation, Transmission and Distribution systems. This includes both substations and mobile (portable) equipment. This support may be provided during maintenance, construction, or while equipment is in operation. The Relay SME provides the second / third level of technical field support beyond the field crews, C&M Supervisors, and the Region Engineer for issues associated with P&C components. The Relay SME serves as a conduit between C&M, Engineering, and Asset Management to provide expertise for operational issues associated with P&C components in the field.
The SVC SME will have lead responsibilities for ensuring operation and maintenance for reliability of our SVC's (Static Var Compensators). Also, the SVC SME will provide support to our NERC CIP compliance team and compliance processes. This position requires strong coordination across the organization for normal and emergent support. Also required is working with our SVC vendors to coordinate support and trouble shooting. Other areas of support:
• Access control for our vendors required for our Medium CIP SVC's
• Planning and scheduling as needed for vendors and technical input
• Event response, critical part identification and vendor support as needed
• Maintenance activities requiring technical support and vendors
• Contracts for vendors including upgrades of systems and components
• SVC system settings, response guides and HMI back ups
QUALIFICATIONS
Basic Qualifications- Lead Engineer
• Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
• Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience.
• Registration as a Professional Engineer

• 5 plus years or more of related Transmission relay protective systems.
• Superior problem solving and analytical skills
• Expert working knowledge of the transmission equipment, systems & associated safety policies, practices, and work procedures

• Skilled in the practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
