The NJ Department of Environmental Protection is hiring a Laboratory Technician for a part-time position (20-25 hours per week) in Ewing Township, NJ. Responsibilities include assisting with water sample collection, data entry, and basic lab functions. Applicants need 60 semester hours in biological/physical sciences or equivalent experience. The position requires a valid NJ driver's license and residency in New Jersey within one year of employment.

Scope of Eligibility

Description

Under direction of a supervisory official, does and assists with laboratory technical work in a chemical, bacteriological, venereal disease control, animal industry, hospital, institution, research, forensic, or other laboratory; does other related duties as required.

Specific to the Position

The Division of Water Monitoring, Standards, and Pesticide Control (DWMSPC), Bureau of Pesticide Control's Pesticide Evaluation and Monitoring Section has a vacancy for an hourly position that will be responsible for the following:
• Assisting with collection of groundwater and surface water samples.
• Assisting with collection of water quality parameter readings.
• Assisting with collection of fresh produce samples.
• Preparing Pesticide Use Survey mailings.
• Entering Pesticide Use Survey data into an Access database.
• Basic laboratory functions including, but not limited to, glassware cleaning, weighing and pipetting.
• Participation in monitoring projects as they are developed.

Preferred Skill Set

Customer service, answering phones, and record retention.
• Ability to schedule and organize meetings and other appointments.
• Ability to prepare reports.
• Ability to access Microsoft Suite such as Outlook, Access, Excel, and Word.
• Ability to speak and write effectively and to analyze, edit, review, and interpret technical material.
• Ability to organize assigned administrative work and develop appropriate work methods

Requirements

Education:

Successful completion of 60 semester hour credits from an accredited college or university which shall have included 24 semester hour credits in the biological and/or physical sciences.

NOTE: Successful completion of a certificate program in Clinical Laboratory Technology may be substituted for the above education.

NOTE: Applicants who do not possess the required credits or certificate in Clinical Laboratory Technology may substitute two (2) years of experience as a technician in a public health, hospital, clinical, or research laboratory performing bacteriological, chemical, histological, serology, and/or virological tests.

NOTE: All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited college or university. All foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.

License

Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Residency

All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011, have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act”.

Authorization to Work

Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States per the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship, and Immigration Services regulations. NOTE: The State of New Jersey does not provide sponsorship for citizenship to the United States.
