The Student Conservation Association is seeking a Cultural Resources Intern in Chicago, IL, from June 16 to November 1, 2025. The intern will assist the Cultural Resources Manager with historic research, documentation, and coordination of projects related to the Fort Leavenworth site. Responsibilities include producing historic tours, organizing records, and supporting NAGPRA obligations. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, with no housing provided.

About Us:
The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is the largest provider of hands-on environmental conservation programs for youth and adults. Program participants protect and restore national parks, national forests, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks, community green spaces, and much more across the country.
Position Summary
This position will assist the Fort Leavenworth Cultural Resources Manager in accomplishing goals set forth in the Fort's Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan. These goals will require work in both the field and digitally. The work will occur on the oldest continuously operating military installation west of the Mississippi with historical assets dating to 1827 as well as pre-Columbus Native American sites. The Fort contains the largest inventory of pre-1919 historic quarters and government buildings in the Army and manages the documentation and Section 106 compliance for these structures, oversees 53 archeological sites, curate artifacts from pre-Columbus period and the era of Westward Expansion at 3 museums and manages a limited on-going NAGPRA actions.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
Assist in the production of a post-wide historic tours: including historic research, content curation, and potentially graphic design; Collate records of work done on historic buildings to submit in an annual report to interested parties; Organize records and lists of historic properties on post; Assist in editing Historic Survey Reports, Historic Housing Brochures, and other contracted reports returned to the CRM for pre-publishing approval; Assist in coordinating responses to NAGPRA obligations as they arise; Assist in the coordination of volunteers to caretake 100 recently planted trees within the historic district; Assist in gathering documentation of condition of historic buildings on post, typically in the form of photography.
Marginal Duties
Data entry; Training; Environmental Education for public and post population; Organizing historic photos and files into more accessible locations; Assisting with the museum's curational workload as appropriate and as time allows; Coordinating between parties to arrange meetings and reservations; Assist in surveying archaeological sites; Other duties as assigned.

Adaptability to change focus as required by local conditions; Technical writing/editing skills; Historic writing/editing skills; Familiarity with reading floor plans

Compensation
• $650 per week (reflects, combined, living and housing allowance)
• One-time relocation travel $1,100
All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
