Intermediate Chemical Process Engineer

Carbon Lock Tech is seeking an Intermediate Chemical Process Engineer in Headingley, MB. The role involves operating and modeling pyrolysis equipment, process design, data analysis, and collaboration with engineers. Candidates must have a degree in chemical/process engineering, 3-5 years of relevant experience, and be a registered Professional Engineer. Carbon Lock Tech is a Manitoba-based cleantech startup focused on addressing climate change through carbon dioxide removal and sequestration. The company is currently developing systems and technologies for converting organic matter into a stable form of biocarbon that can be sequestered or “locked” into a range of valuable applications.

Responsibilities:
• Operation of equipment that processes and pyrolyzes biomass, as well as associated subsystems for bulk solids handling, liquid/gas separation and heat transfer
• Process modeling, H&MB, process design and equipment sizing for our patented pyrolytic process and its subsystems
• Selection and sizing of valving, instruments, material conveyance, gas/liquid separations, thermal energy supply, thermal systems, drying, pelletizing and size reduction of biomass
• Analysis, reporting and interpretation of operational data to improve processing and identify key parameters for commercial scale-up
• Work closely with other engineers on fast moving projects, as well as the research team acquiring information for design and modeling
• Adherence to safety and its integration into process designs and operations
• Other hands-on duties as assigned

Required skills and qualifications:
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in chemical engineering or process engineering from a Canadian recognized university (Required)
• Registered as a Professional Engineer
• 3-5 years experience in process engineering, preferably in pyrolysis, gasification, thermochemical conversion technologies or relevant oil and gas (Required)
• Experience and comfort using tools and working with their hands (Required)
• Experience working in a start-up environment or small company with the ability to pivot as needed, use creativity to solve problems and utilize “out of the box thinking”.
• Experience scaling up “hard tech” from the laboratory to commercial scale, or some stage in-between.
• Strong understanding of fundamental process engineering and ability to carryout sizing calculations without relying on modeling software.
• Demonstrated ability to work under minimal supervision and demonstrate strong competencies as a self learner and team player
• Adhere to safety norms, and ability to wear personal protective equipment as required
