Job Description
The City of Seattle is seeking an Interim Climate Justice Advisor to lead community programming addressing climate change and engage with various city departments. Responsibilities include developing engagement strategies, supervising staff, managing the Green New Deal program, and ensuring alignment with equity and climate justice goals. The ideal candidate will have experience in strategic planning, project management, and fostering relationships with diverse communities.
The Department
The Office of Sustainability and Environment (OSE) develops and implements citywide environmental policies and programs that propel our city toward a sustainable, equitable, and carbon neutral future. OSE’s mission is to ensure a clean and healthy environment for every Seattle resident. We prioritize those currently and historically harmed by racial, economic and environmental injustices and serve as cross-departmental and community partners, innovators, and drivers of groundbreaking city policy.
The Out-of-Class Assignment
We are recruiting for an Out-of-Class Interim Climate Justice Advisor from current regular OSE employees. You will be responsible for OSE’s community facing programming which implements a wide variety of projects addressing climate change. You will also engage with the Green New Deal Oversight Board, coordinate work with 10 City departments and oversee the work of 2 employees.
Your work will focus on:
Internal and external engagement – developing and implementing an engagement strategy for the Climate Action Plan Update and will include leading a Community Assemblies process.
Management and Supervision – provide support, thought partnership, and supervision to two employees:
• The Resilience Hub Advisor who ensures that the Resilience Hub Strategic Plan is aligned with Green New Deal and broader climate priorities.
• The Climate and Environmental Justice Associate who coordinate and supports the Green New Deal Oversight Board functions as well as other projects connected to OSE’s Climate Justice Team.
Green New Deal Program Management – oversee and align Seattle’s Green New Deal related work with City Departments, facilitating strategy sessions, handling communications, and building and maintaining partnerships with key advisory bodies and organizations. This will include managing the Green New Deal budget and related city budgeting processes, tracking scopes of work for 6 contracts, and developing the 2025 Green New Deal Oversight Work Plan.

This Out-of-Class civil service position is classified as a Strategic Advisor 2, General Government, and is exempt from FLSA (not eligible for overtime). The full pay range for this discretionary pay title is $54.60 - $81.93 hourly. The target salary for this assignment is $70.73 hourly.

Hybrid work:
This position offers the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule, with arrangements based on an agreement between the employee and their supervisor. Some local travel and regional travel will be required, along with occasional evening and weekend in-person meetings.
