Job Description
The position of Instructor, Horticulture/Director of Sustainable Agriculture at the State of South Carolina involves teaching horticulture courses, developing course materials, and participating in college and community activities. The role requires a Master's degree in Horticulture or related fields, experience in teaching and sustainable agriculture, and the ability to teach at various times. Physical presence for outdoor labs and occasional travel is also required.
Teach Horticulture courses to a diverse student body using effective teaching strategies; develop, revise, and maintain course materials; recommend/design new courses and or programs; maintain office hours; participate in appropriate professional development opportunities; participate in College and community activities, promote the mission of the College' develop/implement retention strategies, assist in graduate placement; attend graduation ceremony; assist with student orientation and registration; serve on College committees; promote institutional goals; and assist with administrative responsibilities.
Teaching may be on any campus and during the day, evening or a combination. Assists in day-to-day tasks of Arboreta planning, maintenance, and renovation, and assists department chair as necessary. This horticulture faculty will be the Director of Sustainable Agriculture.
TEACHING PERFORMANCE - present course material through a variety of appropriate and effective instructional strategies to facilitate the learning process.
INSTRUCTIONAL DEVELOPMENT - develop, revise, and maintain courses and curriculum through course objectives, outlines, and other appropriate instructional material. Recommend and assist with the design and development of new courses and/or programs.
INSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT - maintain required office hours, exhibit effective classroom management and control, attempt new instructional strategies and submit timely and accurate information and reports.
STUDENT ADVISEMENT - maintain current, accurate information on assigned advisees and assist with student's academic, professional, and, when applicable, personal development.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - participate in activities designed to develop professional skills to maintain and improve proficiency in present employment position.
COLLEGE AND/OR COMMUNITY SERVICE - participate in College activities and the promotion of the College and its programs through public service.
PROGRAM COORDINATION - Complete tasks required to ensure program/course compliance and success; maintain daily program operations; communicate with faculty, department chair, dean, other College personnel and industry representatives.
Masters degree in Horticulture, or related field with 18 hours in horticulture, or three to five years of applicable experience in education, teaching, extension, or related industrial/agricultural experience.
Experience teaching various hands-on horticulture and sustainable agriculture courses or programs. Possess SC Pesticide Applicators License. Consulting/Teaching experience dealing with soils, pest control, turf, and landscape design. Experience working with the technical college/community college system. Experience working with a public garden/arboretum.
Required to teach day, night and online classes as determined by department chair. Instructor should be physically able to instruct outside labs and classes, demonstrate techniques and operate equipment used for horticulture applications. Position also requires an occasional overnight trip to conferences, trade shows and botanical garden.
