Job Description
SAIT is seeking an Instructor in Environmental Sciences for the MacPhail School of Energy in Calgary, AB. The role involves teaching courses on environmental technology and water programs, developing instructional materials, and engaging students in real-world problem-solving. Candidates should have a Master's degree in a relevant field, teaching experience, and knowledge of GIS and environmental regulations. The position requires collaboration and mentoring of a diverse student population.
The MacPhail School of Energy is the only energy school in Canada, and we are charting a new course with a focus on sustainable energy sources and practices. MacPhail School of Energy provides hands-on, industry-guided training in labs that mimic job site environments, giving students the skills needed to find a rewarding career in the energy sector.
The Opportunity
You bring a strong background in the natural sciences with a passion for applied teaching, hands-on learning, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The ideal candidate will possess experience in areas such as physical hydrology, stormwater management and analysis, geomatics or spatial sciences, earth systems, or ecology. Proficiency in GIS, field instrumentation, and environmental data platforms is a strong asset.
The position is well-suited for individuals with a graduate degree (M.Sc. minimum or technical equivalency, Ph.D. preferred) and relevant industry or applied research experience. Demonstrated familiarity with environmental regulations, permitting, and compliance frameworks-especially as they pertain to land, water, or environmental planning-is considered a significant advantage . In addition to these technical skills, an individual prepared to mentor and support students across a wide diversity of backgrounds is required.

Note: SAIT, as a post-secondary institution, serves a diverse student population. Therefore, instructional duties may occasionally be required during early mornings, evenings, and weekends. If selected, specific scheduling arrangements will be discussed between you and the leader.
The Role
• Instruct courses related to environmental technology, and water programs
• Collaborate with other instructors and academic leaders to integrate tools, technologies, and field experiences into curriculum
• Assist with the development of advanced instructional materials in areas such as hydrology, environmental systems, and GIS-based analysis
• Coordinate industry guest speakers, field trips, or student engagement activities aligned with regulatory or sustainability-focused projects
• Support the operation and enhancement of lab-based or computer-aided learning environments.
Qualifications & Experience
• Master of Science in Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences, Geography, Ecology, or related field is required
• Must have working experience teaching, mentoring, or professional training in applied environmental fields
• Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences or closely aligned discipline is preferred
• Industry or regulatory agency experience (e.g., consulting, permitting, compliance, monitoring) is considered an asset
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
Skills & Knowledge
• GIS and spatial analysis, environmental instrumentation, data interpretation, and experience with regulatory reporting tools
• Excellent communication, teamwork, adaptability, and commitment to student success
• Experience with cross-cultural engagement or equity-centered environmental work
