The University of Hawaii seeks a part-time Instructor for Sustainable Agriculture at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, HI. About the position
The Instructor for Sustainable Agriculture at Windward Community College will play a pivotal role in developing and coordinating a collaborative workforce training program focused on algae culture. This position is under the general supervision of the Dean for Division II and involves working closely with Hawaii Community College (HawCC) to oversee a Perkins-funded project aimed at creating a workforce development pathway in algae culture. The instructor will be responsible for ensuring that the curriculum aligns with industry needs and is consistently delivered across multiple campuses, including sites on Hawaii Island and Oahu. In this role, the instructor will engage in research and collaboration with the Principal Investigator, institutional partners, and community organizations to identify workforce needs and potential employment opportunities in the algae culture industry. The instructor will also develop curriculum that incorporates these workforce needs and coordinate instruction between WCC and HawCC. This includes conducting outreach activities to assist students with program applications, explaining financial aid options, and promoting work-based learning opportunities to facilitate student retention and completion of the program. Additionally, the instructor will train and supervise project lab technicians, maintain the project budget, purchase necessary supplies and equipment, and monitor, collect, and analyze project data. The instructor will be required to prepare reports documenting the achievement of project objectives and perform other duties as assigned. This part-time temporary position is set to begin in October 2024 and is not to exceed June 30, 2025, pending funding and staffing requirements. The role may involve evening, weekend, and holiday hours, as well as travel to off-campus locations.
Responsibilities

Requirements
• Master's degree in agriculture, botany, tropical plant and soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences and bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources and environmental management, tropical conservation biology and environmental science, biological sciences, or ecology, OR a Bachelor's degree in the same fields with three (3) years of related work experience.
Nice-to-haves
• Demonstrated ability in curriculum development, including online and/or hybrid instruction, especially in algae culture.

• Work experience in related fields such as algology, algae culture, aquaculture, and/or native Hawaiian seaweeds.

• Experience managing and/or coordinating a grant funded project.
,
• Experience managing or operating a farm, nursery, aquaculture/aquaponics facility, or similar operation for commercial, educational, or research purposes.
,
• Ability and/or successful experience collaborating with higher educational institutions, industry and/or community organizations.
,
• Knowledge of industry workforce training needs for algae culture in Hawaii.
,
• Demonstrated ability to work with students, peers, and staff.
