The University of Hawaii is hiring a full-time temporary Instructor for Sustainable Agriculture at Windward Community College in Kaneohe, HI. Possible conversion from 11- to 9-month and vice versa, depending on operational needs.Duties and ResponsibilitiesCoordinate the operation of the Kiai Loko Center for Limu Studies at Windward Community College (WCC) as described in the College's National Science Foundation (NSF) Tribal College and Universities Program (TCUP) Center grant project. Responsible for overall coordination of all grant activities, including planning coursework related activities and implementations (e.g., curriculum development, preparing and revising course outlines, scheduling classes, advising, training, and mentoring students, etc.). Assignments may include teaching agriculture, aquaculture, or plant science classes, as related to algae and algae cultivation. In addition to conventional college instruction, teaching assignments could involve early college, including language immersion schools, and other venues served by the College.Under general supervision, develop curriculum, teaching strategies, instructional materials and methods which: 1) use current technology in instruction where appropriate; 2) integrate instruction of appropriate quantitative/logical thinking skills into course content; 3) develop and assess the competencies and skills for the course student learning outcomes; 4) address the learning needs of community college students; and 5) teach courses utilizing online, hybrid, and/or distance delivery formats as needed.Mentor students engaged in algae-related research projects or students acting as student mentors for program students. Process and oversee the administration of grant stipend/scholarship funds awarded to these students.Independently plan, organize and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments. Maintain a minimum of one office hour per week for each course taught.Develop and maintain an approved program of professional self-development. Participate in departmental, faculty and administrative committees, community service, in-service training and assessment activities.Hire, train, and supervise laboratory technician(s) and student employee(s) served by the grant.Manage the project budget, purchase supplies and equipment, collect and analyze relevant project data, prepare and submit annual reports on grant activities, and other reports as required.Work collaboratively with local agriculture/aquaculture/aquaponics businesses, community stakeholders, other University of Hawaii entities, and the campus Service Learning Office to develop internship and research opportunities in algology, algae culture, agriculture, and sustainability for WCC students. Conduct outreach with community partners, stakeholders, and industry to coordinate activities in ways that serve the algae interests of the Windward Oahu community.Assignments may include evening and weekend hours, off-campus locations, and/or travel off-island (e.g., the College's Early College program, including language immersion schools, Waikalua fishpond, algae cultivation sites, grant-related meetings, conferences, workshops, etc.).Perform other duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsMaster's degree in agriculture, botany, tropical plant & soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences & bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources & environmental management, tropical conservation biology & environmental science, biological sciences or ecology; ORBachelor's degree in agriculture, botany, tropical plant & soil sciences, biological engineering, molecular biosciences & bioengineering, natural resources, natural resources & environmental management, tropical conservation biology & environmental science, biological sciences or ecology; and three (3) years related work experience.Desirable QualificationsExperience managing grant-funded projects.Knowledge of the biology, ecology and uses (both traditional and modern) of Hawaiian seaweeds.Demonstrated ability in curriculum development including online and/or hybrid instruction.Successful teaching experience teaching community college courses as substantiated by both student and peer assessments.Experience teaching college level coursework to students in non-traditional settings, such as at the high schools, (e.g., Early College), including language immersion programs.Knowledge of and/or ability to incorporate traditional knowledge, values, practices, and/or issues, such as habitat restoration, invasive species, etc., especially as they relate to algae and algae culture, into the curriculum.Knowledge of and/or ability to incorporate Hawaiian language into instruction.Experience conducting course-level and program-level assessment of student learning outcomes, and analyzing relevant data, and utilizing the results to improve instruction.Knowledge and understanding of student-centered learning and the community college philosophy.Demonstrated ability to serve as a mentor to students engaged in project-based research and/or internships.Demonstrated ability to secure Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) protocol approval for working with vertebrate animals.Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the use of fish in institutional education and research.Knowledge of federal and state regulations governing the importation and culture of biological organisms into the State of Hawaii for education and research purposes.Coursework and/or experience in related fields such as algology, algae culture, aquaculture, aquaponics, and/or hydroponics.Experience managing or operating a farm, nursery, aquaculture/aquaponics system, or similar operation for commercial, educational, and/or research purposes.Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, faculty, staff, and community organizations.To Apply: Click on the "Apply" button on the top right corner of the screen to complete an application and attach the following required documents: Resume;Cover letter indicating how you meet the minimum and desirable qualifications of the position; andGraduate and/or undergraduate transcript(s) showing degree and coursework to date appropriate to the position.
