About the role

We are seeking a Senior Research Engineer to join the Centre for Innovation in Sustainable Design and Manufacturing (ISDM) Research Centre, part of the Mechanics of Materials Division. In this key role, you will be the primary point of contact for all laboratory-related matters, providing expert technical support, coordinating experimental work, and ensuring smooth laboratory operations. You will collaborate with Research Engineers to maintain safety and efficiency in all ISDM Research Centre activities, while contributing to the interpretation of results for publication. This is an autonomous position that requires proactive problem-solving and cross-team collaboration.

What you would be doing

You will serve as the primary point of contact for all laboratory-related matters, offering expert advice and assisting in interpreting experimental results for publication. Your work will focus on the Thermo Mechanical (TM), High Temperature Testing (HTT), and Dynamic Fracture and Forming (DFF) Laboratories, ensuring safe, efficient operations in line with research objectives. You will promote a collaborative atmosphere between the ISDM Research Centre and other divisional groups, support digitising and digitalising technologies, and liaise with the manufacturing industry to enhance the Centre’s reputation. Additionally, you will be an active member of the Departmental Technical Support Group, contributing to the ongoing development and maintenance of laboratory facilities.

What we are looking for
• You must be educated to a minimum BTEC/HNC standard, or with a recognised apprenticeship, or equivalent experience in a Mechanical Engineering discipline (or closely related subject).
• Demonstrable experience of working within a materials mechanical testing research laboratory is essential.
• You must have experience of managing laboratory operations to meet set deliverables.
• You must have experience on advising on technical requirements for advanced research work, troubleshooting any operational problems that may arise.
• Demonstrable experience in Mechanical testing is essential, including:
• Quasi-static and high-rate Instron
• Gleeble
• Bi-axial and other high-temperature and/or high-rate testing methods
• Experience of record keeping and safety administration is essential.
