Job Description

The Idaho Panhandle National Forest is seeking a Forestry Technician (Recreation) AmeriCorps Member for a 12-week position starting May 2025. Responsibilities include monitoring recreation facilities, ensuring compliance with regulations, maintaining trails, and answering visitor inquiries. Candidates must be 18-30 years old, U.S. citizens, and able to work outdoors. Housing is available at the St. Joe Ranger District in Avery, ID. Compensation includes a living allowance and education award.
Position Summary: The Idaho Panhandle National Forest, St. Joe Ranger District is recruiting one 480 Hour (12 weeks) Forestry Technician (Recreation) beginning May through August 2025. Incumbents will perform a variety of work in support of the unit’s recreation program along the St. Joe and St. Maries Rivers. The St. Joe River is classified as a Designated Wild & Scenic River from Avery, Idaho up to St. Joe Lake. The St. Joe River has 17 campgrounds ranging in size from 2 to 18 sites, and 9 of those campgrounds are within the St. Joe River Corridor.

Duties and Responsibilities: Duties will include (25%) checking visitor use of recreation facilities, and (25%) monitoring compliance with recreation area rules and regulations of parking, campfires, sanitation, use of picnic sites, and/or boat launch sites. Additional duties include (50%) reporting violations to their supervisor, cleaning recreation areas and maintaining improvements, answering routine questions about recreational activities, constructing and/or maintaining trails, and performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
• Ages 18-30 (up to 35 for veterans)
• U.S. Citizen or lawful, permanent resident
• Must pass a background/driver check
• Must have a high school diploma or GED
• Willingness to work as part of a team
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• A positive attitude
• Current driver’s license
• Ability to lift and carry 50lbs
• Ability to work outdoors in remote settings and inclement weather on uneven ground

Desired Qualifications:
• Attention to detail.
• Experience with hand tools, power tools, cleaning chemicals, and basic carpentry.
• Experience with cleaning and maintaining recreation areas and facilities
• Coursework in natural resources, geology, forestry, or related field.
• A strong interest in resource management, public lands, and visitor services.
• Basic First Aid/CPR
• Personal transportation

Duty/Housing Location: Duties are performed out of the St. Joe Ranger District Office located in Avery, Idaho. Housing is available via the Forest Service bunkhouse apartments, but space is limited. Bunkhouse apartments are currently at $8.44 per day. They feature a furnished 2-bedroom, one bath with an adjacent building that houses a laundry room and a small recreation room. No internet is available at Avery Bunkhouses, but a phone is available for local calls only.

Terms of Employment: One AmeriCorps member will complete a term of service (length dependent on commitment of hours), starting Mid-May through August 2025. The member must complete a minimum of 480 service hours by the end of their term. The member will receive a 30-minute lunch each day and this lunch break does not count towards AmeriCorps member service hours. Training will not exceed 20% of total member service hours.

Program Benefits: $7,680 dispersed on a monthly basis and upon successful completion of program requirements, education award amount of $1,956.35. The position also includes a $500 gear reimbursement and $1000/month housing fund. The living allowance and education award are taxable. Members are responsible for providing their own food. Service eligibility is contingent upon the results of a criminal background check. These positions are sponsored by The Corps Network’s OYSI and EAP program.
