About the position
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking a Hydrologist to join our team in Rawlins, Wyoming. This position is crucial for providing technical advice on hydrological issues and involves a variety of responsibilities related to the management of water resources on public lands. The successful candidate will be responsible for collecting, analyzing, and evaluating water quality and quantity data, which is essential for the effective management of these resources. This includes interpreting and applying water resource information, particularly concerning groundwater and surface water interactions. The role also involves improving methods for the inventory, monitoring, and management of water resources, ensuring that our practices are both effective and sustainable. In addition to data analysis, the Hydrologist will participate in emergency stabilization and rehabilitation efforts following wildland fire activities. This includes compiling and analyzing both new and existing data to provide projections of water supply and flow on public land. The Hydrologist will serve as the primary point of contact for hydrologic and water resources issues, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, other federal agency personnel, and tribal councils to ensure comprehensive management of water resources. This position requires a strong foundation in hydrology and related sciences, as well as the ability to communicate effectively with various stakeholders. The work environment is primarily office-based, but fieldwork is also a significant component, requiring visits to diverse terrains and conditions. Safety protocols must be adhered to at all times, especially when working in potentially hazardous environments. The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise, analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented setting.
Responsibilities
• Provide technical advice on hydrological issues.

• Perform technical report writing and review.

• Collect, analyze, and evaluate water quality and quantity data associated with the management of public lands.

• Interpret and apply water resource information, including groundwater/surface water interactions.

• Improve methods for the inventory, monitoring, and management of water resources.

• Participate in hydrology-related emergency stabilization and rehabilitation following wildland fire activities.

• Compile and analyze new and existing data to provide projections of water supply and flow on public land.

• Serve as the point of contact on hydrologic and water resources issues, working with interdisciplinary teams and other federal agency personnel.
Requirements
• U.S. Citizenship is required.
,
• Must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position.
,
• Experience collecting, summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting climatological, surface water, ground water, or water quality data.
,
• Education: A degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in hydrology or related fields, including calculus and physics.
,
• For GS-09: One year of specialized experience at the GS-07 level or equivalent, or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in hydrology or a related field.

• For GS-11: One year of specialized experience at the GS-09 level or equivalent, or 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. in hydrology or a related field.

• Experience providing input and advice on watershed actions or plans associated with forest management, wildlife management, or road construction.

• Technical advice on water rights applications and claims.

• Assessing, monitoring, and researching existing work on nutrients and pollutants in ground water and surface water.
