Grid Engineer

Do you read the South African grid codes and regulations every night before you go to bed?

Do you dream about ways to better optimise grid-connection through repowering strategies? With over 1GW of renewable energy projects currently in operation, our client is one of the biggest players in the African energy sector.

They are looking for a Grid Engineer with an embedded understanding of all aspects of the grid, including generation patterns, grid regulation, turbines and substations, utility-scale grid-connection systems, grid integration, grid negotiation agreements, and grid flow studies and analyses. Your specialties should include grid capacity assessments, MV and HV connection design, BOP, and high-stakes negotiation.

Engaging with government stakeholders responsible for grid connection and operation is an essential part of this role.

Responsibilities
• Stakeholder engagement: liaising with Grid Operators and Governmental Agencies related to grid connections
• Manage the interconnection process with Grid Operators and relevant authorities
• Design and optimise electrical grid systems
• Conduct load flow studies and analyses to ensure efficient power distribution
• Utilise knowledge of local legislation and regulations to produce guidelines and tools for project activities
• Analyse and evaluate Grid Connection Offers and technical information impacting Grid Connection Design
• Coordinate grid connection applications, feasibility reviews, and acceptance processes
• Evaluate Grid Impact studies in steady-state, dynamic, and transient conditions of all electrical parameters
• Create dynamic models in wind generators and PV inverters for simulations to model power flow and frequency response
• Design and implement systems for grid expansion, renewable energy integration, and smart grid technologies
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and industry standards
• Analyse data from grid monitoring systems to identify trends and potential issuesDesired Skills

Experience & Qualifications
• Master's degree in electrical engineering
• Registered Professional Engineer (ECSA)
• 7+ years experience as an electrical engineer in the renewable energy industry
• 6+ years of project experience working with substations and grid connection
• Embedded knowledge of simulation software such as Digsilent, PSSE, PSCAD
• Meticulous understanding of South African grid codes, regulations, and standards related to grid connection and operation
• Experience with power systems, grid studies, and utility-scale renewable energy project grid connection in South Africa
• Experience negotiating grid connection agreements
Package & Remuneration

R1.6 million - R1.8 million CTC per annum
