Job Description
Aza is hiring a Horticulture Technician for a temporary, part-time position in Pine Knoll Shores, NC, working up to 32 hours per week. Responsibilities include maintaining gardens, greenhouses, and interacting with aquarium visitors. The role requires physical stamina and knowledge of horticulture. Work hours are Thursday to Sunday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with a pay rate of $16 per hour. Applications are accepted until June 2, 2025.

Horticulture Technician
This is a 6-month temporary position with a maximum of 32 hours per week. It is classified as temporary/part-time and does not include state benefits. Accepting applications until 5pm on 6/2/2025.
Description of Work:
Primary duties for this position include assisting the Conservation Horticulturalist with the care of landscape and native gardens (watering, weeding, mulching, pruning, plant replacement and pond maintenance) as well as landscaped and natural areas, maintenance of greenhouse and container plant nursery including watering, pruning, transplanting, propagation, record keeping and IPM pest control; maintenance of interior exhibit plantings, including scheduled watering, pruning, pest control and rotation of temporary plantings.The Horticulture Technician must be able to demonstrate plant care techniques and skills to volunteers and seasonal staff and ensure that the work is performed properly.Daily interaction with aquarium visitors while working on grounds to answer questions and educate about the gardens, pollinators and other aquarium exhibits should be expected. The typical schedule for this position is a Thursday through Sunday work week. The daily schedule for this position is 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Weekend and holiday work will be a large component of this position.

• Walking and standing for long periods of time
• Climbing steep stairs and ladders
• Lifting up to 50 lbs. including plants and bags of soil and fertilizer
• Transporting soil and mulch in wheelbarrows or carts
• Using shovels, rakes, and other tools to prepare soil and beds for planting
• Bending, kneeling, or squatting to install new plants and remove weeds from landscaping
• Using ladders to prune trees and larger shrubs
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Working knowledge of landscaping, horticulture, or farming techniques
• Experience caring for and maintaining plant populations

DNCR does not engage in dual employment for temporary positions; if you are currently employed with another State agency, State university, or the NC National Guard and intend to remain employed with that entity, you may not be considered for temporary work with DNCR.
Salary
$16 per hour
