Responsibilities include conducting safety surveys, monitoring radiation doses, providing training, and ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations. Hospital Safety Officer
The University of Miami/UHealth department of UHSC(Facilities) has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Hospital Safety Officer to work at the UHealth Medical Campus. The Hospital Safety Officer (H) is responsible for ensuring that all Joint Commission guidelines for the Physical Environment of Care standards at the assigned hospital and/or hospital based clinics remain compliant. This includes annual review and completion of the Periodic Performance Review (PPR), which include the following Joint Commission Chapters: Life Safety (LS), Emergency Management (EM), and Environment of Care (EOC).
Core Responsibilities
• Ensures that all Joint Commission guidelines for the EOC, Life Safety, and EM chapters at the hospitals and clinics remain compliant. This includes annual review and completion of the Periodic Performance Review (PPR).
• Coordinates and oversees all AHCA, CMS, OSHA and all other applicable AHJ standards.
• Coordinates activities of the management plans within the Environment of care for the hospital and serves as the Safety Officer. Co-chairs EOC Committee with the Director of the EOC Compliance.
• Provides support to the Director of EOC Compliance, regarding safety improvement efforts.
• Ensures safety and facility quality control is in compliance with local, federal, state regulations and provide consultations.
• Reviews and track data provided within the EOC program to make ongoing improvements.
Department Specific Functions
The Haz Mat Safety Officer - Radiation Safety position is essential for ensuring the safety and compliance of radiation practices across all UHealth facilities. Reporting to the Radiation Control Center leadership, this role supports the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) and is integral to maintaining radiation safety standards. The incumbent is responsible for providing patient-facing radiation safety services, including surveys, monitoring, training, and compliance with federal and state regulations. This position also plays a critical role in managing hazardous materials and ensuring safe handling practices in radiation environments.
Radiation Safety Surveys and Monitoring:
• Conducts radiation safety surveys and audits to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
• Tests for leakage and contamination of sealed sources.
Maintains current radioactive materials inventory.
Monitors and maintains records of personnel radiation doses, and evaluates trends for safety improvements.
Training and Education:
• Develops and conducts training programs for staff on radiation safety.
Provides patient education on radiation safety protocols and procedures.
Assists faculty in matters concerned with radiation or radioactive materials.
Compliance and Regulatory Oversight:
• Conducts detailed research and reviews of policies and procedures in support of the UHealth compliance program.
• Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations related to radiation safety (e.g., NRC, OSHA).
Maintains current licenses/registrations, and administers the University Radiation Protection Program.
• Reports reportable occurrences to the appropriate regulatory agency.
• Oversees corrective actions taken by departments to correct non-compliance revealed by inspections.
Hazardous Materials Management:
• Manages the safe handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials used in radiation practices.
• Conducts regular inspections to identify potential hazards and implements measures to mitigate risks.
• Coordinates waste management reporting and monitoring efforts.
Incident Response and Investigation:
• Responds to emergencies involving radiation or radioactivity and conducts investigations.
• Leads the investigation of radiation safety incidents and radioactive material spills.
• Conducts root cause analysis and develops corrective action plans.
Collaboration and Communication:
• Serves as a key contact for radiation safety inquiries and issues within the UHealth System.
• Collaborates with the Radiation Safety Officer and other departments to ensure comprehensive radiation safety management.
• Participates in the UHealth Environment of Care Committee and other safety committees as needed.

Core Qualifications
• High School diploma or equivalent. Preferably Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such Radiation Protection, Physics, Nuclear Medicine, Engineering, Safety, Occupational Health, or Environmental Science is preferred.
• Certification in relevant specialty or field required. Certified Health Physicist, Radiation Safety Technician preferred.
• Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in radiation safety and hazardous materials management.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
• Demonstrates knowledge of radiation safety regulations and best practices.
• Possesses experience in conducting radiation surveys and monitoring radiation levels.
• Exhibits strong communication and training skills.
• Shows proficiency in hazardous materials management and emergency response.
• Demonstrates ability to conduct incident investigations and develop corrective action plans.
• Having radioactive materials & radiation safety education and training
• Obtaining radioactive materials & radiation safety inspection experience
• Demonstrating experience in the use of radiation safety equipment and software
• Showing knowledge of relevant regulations and accreditation requirements
