Safety, Health & Environment Manager

Your Mission

Based in Mississauga, and as a member of Operations Leadership Team reporting into the VP of Operations, you will develop, implement and integrate programs to create and sustain a safe work environment in which serious injuries and accidents can be prevented in compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety regulations and requirements both at local and global level. The HSE Leader will support stakeholders to positively contribute to the Health, Safety, Security and Well-being of people and planet by enabling a Culture of Caring. This position will be responsible for the Environmental Initiatives at a National Level across Canada.

The scope of the job is complex with interactions at multiple manufacturing sites and methods, as well as an extensive network of sales reps and remote workers. The Manager will need to work both independently and with teams to meet business needs across the organization and contribute to help drive the overall business and HSE strategy.

This is an opportunity for the Manager to innovate by leading the development and execution of environmental initiatives throughout our National operations to ensure the company meets its overall sustainability goals.

What you will do

Mandate
• Comply with all global, local, and national safety and legal requirements.
• Perform all job responsibilities under the strictest guidelines of all HSE standards.
• Promote HSE within the company.
• Lead Environmental initiatives Nationally with the support of regional HS&E resources

Key tasks
• Health & Safety Programs: Responsible for HSE at the Mississauga site, lead development of HSE programs for all Canadian sites, liaise and participate in the North American Market and other Group safety initiatives and programs. Ensure all employees, supervisors and managers are aware of their safety responsibilities while keeping senior management informed on any HSE related issues.
• Ensure the development and effective implementation of appropriate HSE policies and procedures and provide for their updating in line with the purpose, mission, vision, strategies and objectives identified at the global level and in compliance with local legislation. Scope includes workers on-site, working from home, workers in other provinces outside Ontario (Quebec, Alberta, BC)
• Initiate and influence the integration of HSE policies and procedures into the business while overseeing compliance using local dashboards and analytics. Perform risk assessment on all jobs, equipment, new projects and any other potential hazards including ergonomic assessments. Conduct investigations on accident and near misses recorded at the site while ensuring all corrective actions are resolved in a timely manner. Chair Joint Health & Safety Committee, ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety Act. Conduct RCA as needed.
• Reporting / benchmarking: manage record / data keeping systems, KPI’s, and statistics, identifying trends and suggesting improvement plans, conducting inspections and audits, providing Group level with the needed information for both H&S and Environment.
• People development: Ensure effective education programs on HSE are in place increasing the sensitivity of the whole organization to good practices and implementing an effective communication. Continuously improve safety culture and implement planet friendly processes concerning waste generation and disposal, water usage, energy usage and other.
• Technical Support: Provide technical support to senior management on any safety or environment related issue as well as input and validation of new projects and installations. Provide HSE input for CAPEX projects.
• Government Relationships: Interface professionally with government officials in all areas of health, safety, and environment. Ensure requirements of FM Global Insurance are met.
• Environmental Objectives: Define and lead execution of long-range plan to improve our environmental performance (energy and water efficiency). Build, maintain and coordinate an internal and external network of specialists. Zero Waste to landfill: Responsible for implementing program(s) to achieve ZWTL company objectives
• Operational Excellence: Assess then develop and implement OPX program for Health and Safety module. Assess then develop and implement OPX program for Environmental module.

What we expect from you
• Bachelor’s degree or college diploma in Occupational Health, Safety and/or Environmental Studies or a related field.
• Professional Designation either as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) registered with the Board of Canadian Registered Safety Professionals (BCRSP), and/or Certified Health & Safety Consultant (CHSC)
• 5-10 years of proven leadership experience in a similar role preferably in a food manufacturing environment.
• Proven knowledge of health, safety and environmental systems and processes with a passion to make a difference.
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills (verbal/written).
• Experience in a fast paced multi-tasking environment.
• Capable to organize, plan and execute tasks reliably and independently.
• Able to think logically around issues & tasks and resolve conflicts.
• Ability to facilitate changes by influencing others through analytical approach.
• Proficient in MS Office
