Job Description
Climate Analytics is hiring a Head for the Climate Science Impacts Team in Berlin, Germany. This role involves providing scientific leadership, managing resources, and fostering collaboration within the organization. The team focuses on climate research and impacts, particularly for vulnerable regions. The Head will represent the organization externally and engage with stakeholders while overseeing project development and fundraising efforts to support climate science initiatives.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Climate Analytics is currently seeking a new Head of the Climate Science Impacts team, hereafter referred to as the Science Team, based in Berlin, Germany. The Science Team is a dynamic place for natural and social scientists to conduct meaningful research on climate change. Climate Analytics aims to close the loop between emissions pathways, global climate projections, and climate impacts, providing climate services at regional and sub-national levels. We are committed to supporting the achievement of the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 degree Celsius Long Term Temperature Goal and strive to provide the science needed to drive climate ambition.
The team includes expertise in scenario research, global climate projections, climate action, impacts, adaptation, and loss and damage, with a strong focus on stakeholder engagement, particularly with Small Island Developing States and Least Developed Countries. Within Climate Analytics, the Science Team works closely with other teams, particularly the Implementation Strategies team and the Climate Policy & Diplomacy team, as well as regional offices in Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, North America, and South Asia, ensuring the organization’s overall work is based on the best available science.
The Science Team is structured into groups focused on key work areas, with Group Leads guiding thematic work within the team. The Science Team works on an exciting array of third-party funded projects that contribute to the global discourse on climate science and policy. The team also generates regionally specific scientific knowledge to ensure that we are working on the ground to implement climate mitigation and adaptation strategies while accessing the best science.
The Head of the Science Team will play a pivotal role in shaping scientific outputs that support the organization’s mission, fostering a culture of leadership and expertise in climate change sciences, and will be instrumental in developing Climate Analytics’ scientific work globally.
Responsibilities
• Strategy & Leadership
• Provide scientific leadership, including strategic choice of key focus research topics.
• Support group leads in implementing projects to ensure alignment with Climate Analytics’ strategy as well as its mission and vision.
• Support group leads in the strategic management of resources.
• Build spirit of collaboration and develop synergies within Climate Analytics teams.
• Maintain scientific integrity and provide overall quality oversight of the Science Team's work.
• Maintain and enhance the scientific profile of the organization.
Representation & Stakeholder Engagement
• Represent Climate Analytics science externally in media, high-level events, conferences, and science-policy processes.
• Establish and maintain solid working relationships with key stakeholders, including the scientific community and representatives of small island states, least developed countries, non-governmental organizations, and UN institutions.
Project Development & Fundraising
• Provide leadership to identify opportunities with new and existing partners related to climate science.
• Empower group leads to develop capabilities in this area.
• Lead in-team processes to develop new ideas, programmes, and projects.
• Support the acquisition of funding from networks through strategic leadership.
Management
• Lead and manage the Science Team, including line management of group leads.
• Select, recruit, and onboard new team members at the group lead level, supporting group leads in the recruitment of new team members.
• Create and foster a role model culture of respect and zero tolerance for discrimination, abuse of authority, harassment, sexual harassment, and sexual exploitation/abuse.
• Ensure accountability of actions and perform duties in accordance with Climate Analytics’ protection mechanisms and action plans, taking into account gender parity and diversity objectives.
PROFILE
• Strong academic background in climate change science (PhD) with a well-documented track record of scientific publications.
• Leadership and management skills with the ability to build and motivate high-performing teams (10+ years’ work experience in addition to PhD).
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels.
• Strategic mindset with the ability to align team and organizational goals.
• Good knowledge of climate system impact modelling approaches and familiarity with the use of climate emulators in climate impact studies, and consequences of emission pathways for global and regional climate change.
• Connections and affiliations with academic institutions and an interest in developing this asset to facilitate the supervision of PhD students.
• Good understanding and willingness to engage in scientific media discussions around the 1.5°C long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement.
• Experience working with SIDS, LDCs, and vulnerable countries in the field of climate science, impacts, and adaptation climate change-related issues is an asset.
• A strong scientific network in relevant areas of expertise is important.
• Experience contributing to debates and analyses at the climate science-policy interface is essential.
• Experience working with the IPCC and/or UNFCCC is an asset.
• Excellent English written and verbal communication skills are essential; additional languages are an asset.
• Willingness to travel is important.
