Job Description

The Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources is hiring a Hatchery Worker for the Montebello Fish Cultural Station. Responsibilities include grounds and building maintenance, fish culture and feeding, public interaction, and driving. The position averages 30 hours per week, is wage-based at $16.00 per hour, and requires knowledge of fish culture, outdoor work ability, and a valid Virginia driver’s license. No benefits or housing are provided.

Job Duties

This wage position is responsible for the following duties at Montebello Fish Cultural Station in Nelson County, Virginia.
• Grounds Maintenance – mowing/trimming facility grounds and keeping visitor areas neat and clean; building maintenance & painting; road and trail maintenance
• Fish Culture – monitoring fish health & condition; medicating fish as needed; pump waste from raceways; disinfect & clean dam boards/screens; set up raceways & dam; assist with pump installation
• Feeding Fish – the feeding of trout multiple times per day to assure optimal growth of the trout
• Public Interaction – informing hatchery visitors about the facility; angler interaction; answering public inquiries about the agency, local area, and facility; guiding facility group tours; answering phone call inquiries * Driving – requires a significant amount of driving in heavy NOVA and city traffic at times, in large vehicles loaded with fish and water on narrow mountain roads. Drivers licensed with a CDL and/or have large work truck driving experience, are encouraged to apply.

The incumbent in this position will average 30 hours per week. This position is classified as WAGE and therefore is NOT eligible for covered state employee benefits. On site housing is NOT provided. Position requires incumbent to work during inclement weather conditions, on holidays and weekends.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of fish culture and/or animal care; the ability to work in an outdoor environment and inclement weather; ability to lift 50 pounds; a valid Virginia driver’s license ; the ability to communicate and interact with the public; to be able to work with minimal supervision at times; the ability to understand/comprehend written and verbal directions/instructions; the ability to operate power tools and motorized equipment; basic mechanicals skills; basic carpentry and plumbing skills
