Required Qualifications:
• Ability to communicate, receive and assign instructions, direct
work, recognize and change priorities. Good oral and written
communication skills.
• Ability to determine acceptable work quality and quantity.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment to
handle complex projects, prioritize and manage multiple tasks under
deadlines.
• Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs., and
perform strenuous physical duties for an entire shift.
• Ability to work outdoors in extreme and varying weather
conditions.
• Ability to operate industry equipment for extended
periods.
• Knowledge and application of safety practices related to job
duties, and safe use of industry related equipment.
• Ability to perform Job Hazard Analysis.
• A commitment to quality, customer service, personal development
and safety.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Basic knowledge of horticulture and ornamental plant materials,
including trees and utilizing the proper grounds operations
equipment required to maintain their growth habits and needs.
• Basic knowledge of proper pesticide use.
• Knowledge of invasive plant species in our area.
• Tree pruning experience

Job Description:

Compile data pertaining to size, content, condition, and other
characteristics of protected habitat at Spring Lake, under the
direction of Grounds Director. Research, design, plan, and perform
duties in the prevention, control, and remediation of invasive
species using various disciplines and industry accepted best
management practices. Manage, improve, and protect natural
resources to maximize their use without damaging the environment.
May conduct soil surveys and develop plans to eliminate soil
erosion to protect habitat around Spring Lake.

Job Duties:
• The Habitat Conservation Technician helps protect some of the
University’s most sensitive and valuable resources, it’s protected
habitats and tree canopy at the prairie around Spring
Lake.
• The position is responsible for performing habitat restoration
and maintenance of the prairie and riparian edge around spring
lake.
• This position is also responsible for performing the
arboriculture maintenance of Spring Lake’s tree canopy by assisting
with health assessment, installation, inventory, and best
management practices.
• Assist with monitoring and managing the health of the prairie
at Spring lake.
• Determine existing and future arboricultural needs by planning,
scheduling, and monitoring the health of the tree canopy at Texas
State University.
• Recognize various tree issues including risk and health
assessment, construction protection, pruning, removal, maintenance
and replacement.
• Complete tree work requested by others through work
orders.
• Monitor invasive plant species on campus, determine best
management practices and perform duties to control them.
• Help monitor and mitigate erosion and storm water damage on
campus.
