Job Description

Mediabistro is hiring a Climate Change Communication Specialist for the Piedmont Environmental Council. The role involves graphic design, stakeholder engagement, translating technical climate data, crafting narratives, web design, and producing interactive content. The specialist will aid in outreach efforts related to a Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment for Albemarle County. No degree is required, and the position is full-time.
Climate Change Communication Specialist

Key Responsibilities
• Graphic Design and Layout: Develop visually engaging materials to effectively communicate complex climate change information.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with municipal leaders, the general public, and various stakeholders to educate them on climate change impacts.
• Science Synthesis and Translation: Translate technical climate change data into accessible language for non-experts.
• Messaging and Storytelling: Craft compelling narratives to convey the urgency of addressing climate change.
• Web Design & Evaluation: Create user-friendly websites and evaluate their effectiveness in disseminating climate change information.
• Interpretive Videos, Illustrations, and Signage: Produce interactive and immersive content to engage audiences and raise awareness about climate change.

The Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) seeks a skilled Climate Change Communication Specialist to assist with outreach and engagement efforts. PEC collaborated with Albemarle County, Sobis, Inc, and Resilient Virginia to develop a Climate Vulnerability and Risk Assessment for Albemarle County, a 200-page technical document. PEC recognized the need for creative communication strategies to engage municipal leaders and the general public about the Assessment's findings.

We developed a suite of communications products in support of PEC's engagement efforts. A public-friendly overview document was created to explain key findings from the Assessment using graphics and easy-to-understand text. Seven videos featuring interviews with Albemarle stakeholders were also produced, highlighting ongoing and expected climate change impacts to the County. These videos, along with the overview document and the Assessment, can be viewed on PEC's Albemarle Climate Action webpage. Additionally, a StoryMap was developed as an interactive and immersive version of the overview document.
