Description

The GIS Technician will support geothermal energy projects by leveraging GIS technologies to analyze, manage, and visualize spatial data. This role will collaborate with geoscientists, engineers, environmental specialists, and project managers to inform decision-making and optimize the planning, development, and operation of geothermal systems. Responsibilities include contributing to site selection, environmental assessments, project risk analysis, and infrastructure management using advanced GIS tools. The ideal candidate will bring strong technical expertise in spatial analysis and data visualization, along with a passion for renewable energy and sustainability. This position reports to the GIS Manager.

Requirements

Responsibilities
• GIS Data Management and Maintenance: Maintain and update geospatial datasets to support geothermal project planning and development. Collect data from external sources (e.g., state, county, city agencies) and ensure data quality, accuracy, and alignment with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
• Data Research and Creation: Identify gaps in existing data and conduct research to build new geospatial datasets. Collaborate with internal teams to gather requirements and create custom layers that meet project-specific analysis needs.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Provide GIS support to field teams, troubleshoot issues related to data collection and spatial analysis, and participate in regular meetings to align GIS efforts with project timelines. Conduct data quality checks with the Geoscience team and ensure proper data storage and access.
• Data Integration and System Improvement: Integrate GIS data with other platforms such as CAD, geological modeling software, and project management tools. Support the development and maintenance of GIS systems, including ArcGIS Enterprise. Create and manage layers in land software (e.g., Quorum) and ensure consistency with GIS databases.
• Data Maintenance and Daily Updates: Maintain frequently used datasets across all storage locations. Coordinate with Land & Leasing teams to ensure spatial data is current and accurately reflected in maps and web applications.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geospatial Sciences, Environmental Science, Geology, or a related field
• 0-2 years of experience with GIS technologies in energy, environmental, or infrastructure sectors; geothermal experience a plus
• Strong understanding of GIS principles, spatial data management, and data visualization
• Experience with GPS, remote sensing, and integrating survey data
• Proficiency in ArcGIS (ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro) and related mapping tools
• Strong experience with spatial databases (e.g., PostGIS, SQL), geoprocessing, and spatial analysis
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data manipulation skills
• Effective written and verbal communication skills; able to explain GIS concepts to non-technical audiences
• Highly organized and able to manage multiple projects independently

Preferred Qualifications
• Experience developing and managing GIS databases for infrastructure projects
• Proficiency in data visualization and web GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS Online)
• Familiarity with CAD software (AutoCAD, Civil 3D)
• Experience with GIS scripting or automation using Python, R, or SQL
• If you have a GIS portfolio showcasing relevant work—such as mapping projects, spatial analyses, or other geospatial deliverables—we strongly encourage you to include it with your application under the documents section. While not required, it helps us better understand your skills and experience.

Location

Fervo Energy is headquartered in Houston, TX with growing offices in Oakland, CA, Golden, CO, Reno, NV, and Salt Lake City, UT. This position will be eligible for some hybrid work flexibility, but regular in-office presence at the Salt Lake City office will be required.
