About the Position
The African Esophageal Cancer Consortium (AfrECC) Foundation is a 501c3 actively seeking a passionate and experienced individual to join our Board. This is a unique opportunity to use your fundraising expertise, vast network of potential donors, and strategic planning skills to make a tangible difference in the fight against esophageal cancer in Africa. This is an unpaid, volunteer position.
About Us
The AfrECC Foundation is a U.S.-based non-profit organization committed to reducing the burden of esophageal cancer in Africa through clinical care, education, prevention, and public awareness. Since 2016, AfrECC has been collaborating with ~14 medical centers across Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, where the incidence of esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) is alarmingly high.
Our Impact
• Supported training of physicians and nurses in endoscopic management.
• Successfully placed over 1500 esophageal stents through collaboration with our founding industry sponsor, Boston Scientific.
• Enhanced the quality of life for patients by enabling them to swallow and live with dignity.
• Conducted groundbreaking research to understand risk factors for ESCC.
• Pioneered innovative screening methods using AI and non-physician health care workers.
• Utilized remote teaching and learning technologies to extend our educational efforts.
Why Join Us?
As a Board member, you will:
• Join a distinguished group of 17 volunteer members from various fields including medicine, business, marketing, and more.
• Lead and contribute to task forces focused on industry relations, policy, and strategic planning.
• Support AfrECC's fundraising efforts to meet critical needs such as endoscopic equipment, training programs, and public outreach.
• Network with international health leaders, participate in strategic planning, and potentially visit AfrECC sites.
• Advocate for esophageal cancer awareness and engage in impactful events and campaigns.
Key Responsibilities
• Term commitment of 3 years.
• Participate in monthly remote meetings.
• Lead or serve on task forces addressing crucial activities.
• Support fundraising, advocacy, and strategic initiatives.
• Encourage and facilitate networking opportunities.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess:
• Proven fundraising skills and a network of donors.
• Strategic planning experience.
• Administrative background and knowledge of non-profits.
• Passion for working with underserved populations, healthcare, international projects, and addressing burdens of cancer.
Additional Information
AfrECC values strong collaborations with medical centers, embassies and international institutions. These include the National Cancer Institute, The World Health Organization, Mayo Clinic, Mt Sinai NY, Univ California San Francisco, University of North Carolina Med Ctr and Bentley University. Recent engagements included a visit to Malawi led by the Malawian Ambassador to the U.S. for an audience with the President of Malawi and an upcoming delegation to Uganda.
