About the position

The Ft Leavenworth Cultural Resources GIS Intern position is an exciting opportunity for individuals interested in the intersection of cultural and natural resource management. This internship, offered by the Student Conservation Association, spans from September 16, 2024, to September 15, 2025, and is based in Leavenworth, Kansas. The intern will work closely with the Fort Leavenworth GIS Manager, Natural Resources Specialist, and Cultural Resources Specialist to support the goals outlined in the Integrated Natural and Cultural Resources Management Plans. The role involves hands-on experience with 3,500 acres of unimproved lands and the management of the largest collection of Pre-1919 Army buildings, providing a unique opportunity to engage with historical and environmental data. The intern will be responsible for conducting various mapping projects using advanced tools such as ARC-GIS and AutoCAD. This includes creating data layers that represent habitats, species ranges, and historic districts, as well as utilizing LIDAR technologies to enhance the accuracy and detail of the mapping efforts. The position requires a proactive approach to ground truthing mapping areas, ensuring that the data collected is accurate and reflective of the real-world conditions. Additionally, the intern will be tasked with data entry into ARC-GIS and AutoCAD, collecting and entering metadata, and geo-rectifying landmarks to support the overall project objectives. Marginal duties may include environmental education and additional data entry tasks as needed.
