About the position
The Forestry Conservation Student position at the USDA Forest Service Job Corps Civilian Conservation Center offers a unique opportunity for individuals aged 16 to 24, or those with disabilities, to engage in various conservation projects on public lands. This program is designed to provide hands-on experience in natural resource management and prepare students for future employment in federal or private sectors. The term of the position lasts from July 15, 2024, to July 15, 2026, with applications accepted on a rolling basis. The role encompasses a wide range of activities including wildland firefighting, timber management, invasive species mitigation, and watershed rehabilitation. Students will learn essential skills such as safety protocols, incident command, and the management of natural resources while actively participating in projects that contribute to the health of the environment. Participants will engage in wildland fire suppression and management, improve watersheds, and learn about soil and hydrology. They will also identify and survey flora and fauna, learn about silviculture, and conduct reforestation efforts. The position requires physical activity, including hiking with a pack and using various tools, which necessitates a certain level of strength and endurance. However, those unable to meet the physical demands are encouraged to apply for other conservation-focused trades available within the program. The program not only provides valuable work experience but also offers a living stipend, free housing, healthcare, and opportunities for education and certification, making it an excellent pathway for young individuals interested in conservation careers.
