Job Description

The Forester 1 position at Green Diamond Resource Company is an entry-level role in forestry, focused on harvest unit layout and reforestation. Candidates should have a degree in Forestry or related fields and experience in forest management. Responsibilities include flagging harvest boundaries, conducting timber cruising, and supporting reforestation activities. The job is located in Korbel, CA, across 400,000 acres of private forestlands, emphasizing sustainable forest management.
Who you are:

You love the outdoors and are naturally curious. You want a career in forestry that includes harvest unit layout and reforestation. With a degree (or coursework) in Forestry or a related field, you’re eager to apply your experience from internships or seasonal jobs in forest management, reforestation, logging, or wildland firefighting. Detail-oriented and adaptable, you’re comfortable monitoring forest health and managing contractors. You’re organized, proactive, and ready to contribute to sustainable forest management.

What the job is:

The Forester 1 role is an entry-level position in private timberland management. You'll have the chance to learn two career paths in forestry: assisting with the engineering/layout of harvest units and road systems for Timber Harvest Plans (THPs) and working with the Silviculture team in forest health and regeneration.

This role involves:
• Flagging harvest boundaries, stream protection zones, wildlife retention areas, and key habitat features (like snags, ponds, and seeps).
• Conducting timber cruising and harvest tree marking within protected areas.
• Performing field reconnaissance, describing site conditions, and working with the RPF to resolve layout issues and design harvest units.
• Accurately documenting technical information for each THP.
• Assisting in designing future harvest areas and access roads.
• Supporting the RPF during pre-harvest, active, or post-harvest inspections alongside contractors and regulatory agencies.
• Conducting stocking surveys, collecting regeneration data, and participation in reforestation activities.
• Assisting with data collection on projects like thinning, slash treatments, and biomass harvesting.
• Contributing to wildlife or stream assessments, surveying, and contract logging under RPF guidance.

If you're new to some of these tasks, our team will provide thorough training to help you build the skills you need to grow your career in natural resources. We also prioritize your safety with extensive training before you head into the field. Our goal is for you to be safe and to support your career development, including a clear path to becoming a Registered Professional Forester if that’s your aim.

What the department is like:

We value team members who bring their expertise, strong work ethic, and a commitment to continuous learning. Our forestry department fosters professional growth by encouraging questions, welcoming new ideas, and providing support to one another.

Where you’ll work:

You’ll be working across nearly 400,000 acres of private forestlands along the Northern California coast, covering Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino counties. These lands feature diverse terrain and working forests where you’ll play a key role in responsible forest management and sustainability efforts.

Compensation Details: The wage for this position is $23.00 to $28.00 per hour based on your experience and demonstrated skill level. The wage is just one part of Green Diamond’s total compensation package. Other rewards include eligibility to receive an annual company financial bonus, and a bonus based on your own performance.

In addition, Green Diamond offers a generous benefit package to include medical/vision and dental, life and disability insurance, 401(k) plan with match and profit sharing. Paid time off includes 9 designated and up to 2 personal holidays, 10 vacation days, 10 sick days, 30 days parental leave, 3 days bereavement, an extra 2 days bereavement unpaid, jury duty, 1 volunteer day, and 5 days family care.
